First off, since the original Wii Sports is bundled with the Wii Id like to exclude it from this argument. I think that leaves Wii Fit and Mario Kart Wii as the other two contenders. I was looking at those games current sales numbers (20 million and 13 million), and they are both impressive. However, I think WSR has the potential to overtake them in lifetime sales. For one the game has a reasonably low price and comes packaged with Wii MotionPlus. Those alone are two incentives to get the game.
Moreover, the game has a huge gamer install base since there are 45 million plus Wii Sports in circulation across the globe. It is safe to assume that people who have already played the first one would generally be more inclined to buy the second reiteration.
Third, as a first party game Nintendo has strongly backed it with a strong advertising campaign. It is also the premier title for the Wii MotionPlus technology. Obviously, Nintendo has a lot of stake in this game and wants it to suceed to boost console sales and open up the Wii MotionPlus market.
Finally, I feel the game delivers. 12 sports with 30+ modes makes it a superb follow up to the already popular Wii Sports. Though it lacks online multiplayer and some other standard features like leaderboards, there is still enough content to satisfy any gamer who found the original enjoyable.
Reviews are not out yet but I expect the game to be well received, 80-90 out of a 100 on aggregate review sites. Anything less would be a surprise to me.
In any event fans have already shown their support for the game in Japan by forking over their hard earned yen. Next month other huge openings will certaintly follow.
So the question is will it be able to gain ground and eventually overtake titles that have come out before it? And in that case would there be any other concievable title that could challenge it?
