Getting both is the best choice.

I played both and I've bought at least 3 copies of each game. They're both fantastic, but I liked LO more.

lost odyssey is the best rpg this gen hands down and the best in a very long time, for me and i've played a ton of rpg games. tales of vesperia is a very good rpg, for me the 4th best rpg this gen. that's because i really liked INFINITE UNDISCOVERY and STAR OCEAN 4: THE LAST HOPE.

1. Valkyria Chronicles
2. Lost Odyssey
3. Tales of Vesperia

That's my top 3 of this generation actually.

LOST ODYSSEY -- however, be forewarned this game will kick your ass if you don't level grind!! Be sure to equip properly, and employ ingenious strategies to get those bosses and even regular enemies down!!

Ignore this guy. The first two bosses are tough, but the game is a cakewalk for the rest of the way through.

What are you on, I'm talking about the sidequests -- Temple of Enlightenment, anyone..... And the game is not a cakewalk. Even the main storyline is tough.

What grinding? The game sets a limit on the grinding you can do. Equipping properly is an integral part of pretty much any RPG, it should go without saying. And what kind of ingenious strategies?

"Oh, well...this enemy is immune to normal attacks, so maybe I'll try magic! I can't believe that worked! What can I say, me and my ingenious strategies!"

The first two bosses are pretty tough, but the main way to beat them is luck, and the game gets increasingly easier after that.

Both excellent games but if I had to pick one it'd be Lost Odyssey by a mile. However, as others have said they're also different styles of game, LO is turn based, ToV is real-time combat.
