Forums - General - Do you believe that the highest paid professionals are the best?

@Manus: I also feel that certain things such as food and beauty are subjective. However, that doesn't prevent people from acquiring titles such as "world's greatest chef" or "most attractive person" etc. That's why I included the third example.

@vagabond: Thanks for your input. I get what words of wisdom meant now.

@everyone: Again, thanks for sharing your thoughts on this topic.

Please remember, sports is just entertainment. The person paying the player pays him because he feels he can generate more revenue then the next guy.

That does not always mean he is the best. The highest paid boxers are not the best, they are the ones that draw a crowd. Same in all sports, however winning usually brings in the money, so quality of play does matter.

For example, the highest paid female tennis player ever, is Anna Kournikova, and she never won a major.

I'm not so sure I agree with the classification of Anna Kournikova being the highest paid female tennis player, primarily because (as you pointed out) her income was unrelated to her tennis career ... She made a lot of money off of celebrity endorsements for companies unrelated to tennis, which she would have (potentially) been able to get if she was high profile in any field.

Truth be told, there will always be some people who (for some reason or another) missed their opportunity to play at a higher level in any sport and would have done well; but (for the most part) the people who make it to the higher tiers tend to be the people with the best combination of talent and experience, and therefore are the best people and have earned their high paychecks.

Example 2: Nobody on earth can beat the UFC Champion in a fight.

This one in particular is pretty silly. There are people who devote their entire lives to bettering themselves through martial arts, and who never seek to show their skills through tournament fighting. You could probably find some monastery in Tibet with a handful of monks who could kick the asses of the best UFC fighters ever seen, using nothing but their feet.

One question: The UFC is real fighting and not some kind of wrestling?

Yes.  People really maim each other.

It's not staged, if that's what you mean. I'm sure there are some Greco wrestlers who could break in half anyone in the UFC, though.

@Happy Squirrel: You mentioned that the people at the top tend to be the ones with the best combination of talent and experience.  But isn't experience affected by (sometimes) uncontrollable factors?  Would you agree that there can exist others on earth with the right talent but who lack the experience? That they're not in the right place at the right time, if you will?

@Khuutra: I agree completely.  Especially if all of the UFC rules were removed.

Not really, some entertainers may be paid less for some reason or another. Or for some; cause of being shy and not participating in show business, but they might be better than some amateur actor that's being highly paid.

Or you might be like me and not want to show off.  :p
