People say $250 Go and $300 PS3 is not a fair comparison which is true.

It does however show how Sony is thinking. No console needs a pricecut more than the PSP and yet they are putting up the price on the new model. What does this mean for the PS3 slim?

it means nothing.. the psp sells like crazy he ps3 does not.... make money where you can. the go will do fine and when the ps3 drops in price it will do fine also.

AND for the 18th time psp 3000 is 169 bucks!!!! if you want a cheaper psp Go is NOT the only option. People always seem to forget that.....

If getting beat by the DS by 300k means you console is selling "crazy " then you are certainly correct. I think the PSP GO is a generally good idea. I think Sony sees the DS's dominance and the way iphone games are gaining steam and are trying to tap into the market with a variation of their current system that will have strong sales.

Thank you Kowenicki

PS3 will need to outsell 360 by:

444,931 per month to catch it by Jan 2011. 102,676 per week.
266,958 per month to catch it by Jan 2012. 61,606 per week.
190,685 per month to catch it by Jan 2013. 44,004 per week.
148,310 per month to catch it by Jan 2014. 34,225 per week.

Current rate is:  -18,262 per month
Avge over last 6 mths
Negative number means 360 is outselling PS3 by that amount per mth on avge

I'm done crying now. So,

1) I have more than 66 posts, thank you very much. Does your keyboard not have 0's on it?

2) Because they just gave it a price cut last year. Two price cuts in two years = BAD! Also, the Arcade hasn't been around for four and a half years, it used to be that crappy Core thing which was somehow different. It had a different name, though! Likewise, the 40GB's price was not cut at all- it was $400 at launch and $400 when they discontinued it for the showoff 80GB. The 20GB was $500, but they canned that when they realised everyone hated it. But I suppose desperation is a bad word. Perhaps "moving too quickly" would be a better way to decscribe it. They plan on supporting the console for a good five more years, they need to space out their price cuts, or they'll have a 360 that costs less than its games!

3) They lose money on the Arcade, and make money on the Pro and Elite- that's exactly what I was saying. So they want to discourage people from buying the Arcade- they'd much rather they bought the Pro or Elite (though Arcade is better than no 360 at all). Cutting the Arcade's price would not help their cause. If they cut the Pro's price along with it, they'd be losing money on everything, and then they don't want any 360s to be sold so they might as well go work for Sony (I am aware that that logic was flawed, since Sony isn't working for Microsoft yet)

4) There are rumours of everything. There are rumours that Sony is launching a PS3 facebook. There are rumours that there will be no PS4. There are rumours that Michael Jackson is still alive (I'm sure there are, anyway). But my rumour came from a site called Ars Technica and that is an awesome name, so my rumour is better.

5) I would predict a $179 Arcade (it was the PS2's price after $199), a $250 Pro (if and only if they can cut costs in some way) and a $300 Elite, if there is a price cut at all, which I still doubt (see 2))

6) Damn, I forgot about the controllers. Damned pesky controllers. Er...they could take out the chrome trim, I'm sure that would save them $200 or so. It's a last resort, though- they should take out Blu-ray before they take that out. They could also move to China, where living costs are lower, so they can reduce everybody's salary.

I once opened up a readers digest to a story that started with "First she cried, and then she got busy" so does that mean you're a girl?

1. You don't deserve those posts, they were all anti Sony, anti PS3 spam messages. You should have been banned long ago for your trolling antics.

2/3. But two severe price cuts spaced two years apart = good? The reason why the 20GB didn't sell better was because it was always in short supply. If people were desperate for a lower priced PS3 and simply could not easily afford the $600 price tag of the 60GB they would have gone for the 20GB, no? However sales statistics really back me up here because that 20GB SKU hardly sold, which is a good thing since mandatory installs would chew through that in now time. I think you're moving too quickly, im not that kinda boy.

With the recession going on people are even more price sensitive than they were a year ago. It makes more sense because of the recession (which also cuts the component costs of the machine too) for them to cut the price again to stimulate demand. They don't want to discourage everyone from buying the Arcade, they just want the people who would have otherwise bought the Arcade who could have easily bought the Premium. I.E. they want people who would have paid a maximum of say $200 to buy an Arcade and everyone else to buy a Premium. Cutting the price of the Xbox 360 makes sense because the profit from services such as Live are truely massive.

4. There are also rumours about you, but MM476 told me to remain silent.

5. Just because the PS2 hit that price doesn't mean the 360 will. Also see 2.

6. You also forgot about Dre.

1) Oh, please. You are such a pathetic Sony fanboy! Accept that your console is in last place, and it's not going to overtake the Wii! Then you can watch a Blu-ray or something, since the PS3 has no games!

2/3) Sony canned the 20GB after a few months because nobody wanted it. It had nothing to do with supply, the 20GB just sucked. And not the good kind of sucking. The bad kind. A $100 price cut in 2007 completely turned the tide of the console war (Wii doesn't count), and turned forums everywhere from "PS3 is dooooomed!" to "360 is dooooooomed!" for a full nine months! You could have a baby in that time, and never once in your pregnancy would you hear "PS3 is doooooomed!". And then you could name your baby PS3, but he would get bullied as a child.

People were willing to pay $600 for a premium model over $500 for a PS3 with half the features taken out. However, people are paying $200 for an Arcade over $300 for a Pro (Arcade accounts for half of all 360 sales, and somebody must be buying Elites). This means that the extra features of the Pro do not justify an extra $100 of price, according to the average consumer. But average consumers suck, because they bought more copies of Carnival Games than SoTC. So, that basically rules out only price cutting the Arcade.

Now, as I was saying, in a recession particularly, Microsoft does not want to be losing money. Yes, Live makes them money, but not all 360 owners will buy Live, so it's not guaranteed this would help in the short term. Plus, you can apparently get a year of Live for $30, which is $20 less than the amount of profit they have just lost on the Pro. The only feasible way they could cut the price of the Pro would be to remove features. But guess what a Pro with removed features is? It's an Arcade. They already have an entry-level mass market price console. So either they stay put, or lose more money.

4) Oh, he just spreads those rumours about everyone so his love for 10 year old obese emo goth girls seems less weird. It doesn't work. The rumours he's been spreading about you involve several sheep, a rope, and a bunch of bananas.

5) If MS cuts its price at the rate you are suggesting, it'll hit $99 by the end of 2011.

6) Whoops.

Are we in agreement now?

Cool post kantor I lolled. :D

I wish sony would atleast first cut the price, people should now be predicting when it's gonna happen not what will happen after the cut. 50-100$ cut will be coming but will it take less than a year or over, no one knows since sony hasn't said anything because they like to act passive. I have no interest in the PSP GO! I never bought a psp and I'll never be buying this either. One game console and a pc is enough for me.

*sigh*, it already has been for multiple weeks in Canada.  Granted they've been on "sale", but it's been at multiple retailers.  It could be a one time deal, but please stop saying it's not possible when it's already happening.

*sigh* the only thing we have is the elite getting cut... no price drop. they already lose money on the arcade they are not gonna lose more.

and last i checked that was just a sale. no M$ person has said there a price cut.. anyway who cares im talking USA. no price cu this year.

Did you ever think that maybe just maybe MS is gonna look into those canadian sales and see if the $150 price is worth doing in America.

Thank you Kowenicki

Well, you said no Xbox would be $150 this year as there has/is ;). My guess is that they're testing the waters for the response to the $150 price tag on the Arcade in a small market like Canada (that actually buys their product and is pretty much the same as the US) before making a decision on when or if to drop the price.

The real question is why would Sony offer a price reduction, or even feel the overwhelming need to do so. I think it is a mass delusion on the part of many. Many who think that Sony really believes it still has a chance to crawl out of a third place finish this generation. That possibility died last year. Period end of story. Anyone telling you otherwise is just stunningly deluded. The deficit is too large, Microsoft has far too many existing advantages, and Microsoft has the winning financial model.

Basically Microsoft has complete control of the situation this generation, and can lay the smack down on Sony any time that Sony even gets the notion that it should compete. Microsoft is just bringing in too much cash, and has a bigger wallet. Further more Microsoft has all the incentive to have a bloody war. That gives them that much more of a chance to bleed Sony further. They bleed Sony enough, and Sony will have no choice, but to abandon manufacturing consoles all together. Which is what Microsoft really wants.

The point is this. Sony knows they cannot change their lot this generation. They are in third, and that is where they are going to stay. The best they can do is eek out some profit to offset their losses, and hopefully build a bank for the next generation. Which they simply have to do unless they are firmly in the low quality high profit margin frame of mind for next generation. They need to bank a couple billion, and not try to get by on razor margins.

You know when Sony will cut the prices. When they need to do so to keep the console selling, and not before. For those saying projections I say there is no law in stone that says they have to make those.
