Forums - Sales - Wii and PS3 price drop, will Microsoft follow?

This is getting very interesting. Sales of the Wii have slowed down a lot and so Nintendo, who have resisted price drops because of the previous huge demand, will now be forced to bite the bullet. With the HD Super Wii on the way it will not be long before they are back with an offering at a premium price point.

Sony have their back to the wall because the PS3 has cost them billions. However sales are stalling purely because it is far too expensive to buy. They have no option but to drop the price if they are to survive in the market. So another platform holder will be biting that price bullet pretty soon.

Which brings us to Microsoft. The Xbox division is nice and profitable and Microsoft have enough money in the bank to buy a country, or two. Already they have made the Xbox 360 the cheapest home console in the market, as well as being the machine that brings its users the most features and benefits. So will they respond to what the competition do to maintain their price advantage? They easily can if they want to.

Microsoft have a number of options. They can bring the price of the base, Arcade, model down to $149 or even $99. This would get them nice headlines. Or they could take advantage of low hard drive prices to bring down the prices of the Pro and Elite models. Or they could just instal far bigger hard drives. Or some combination of the above.

My guess is that there will be a price move from Microsoft in response to what the competition do. Consoles are a bait and hook business model and they will soon get their profit back as the owners buy games and subscribe to Xbox Live. Which means I will finally be going to the shops and buying one.

What the fuck is the HD Super Wii?

Crusty VGchartz old timer who sporadically returns & posts. Let's debate nebulous shit and expand our perpectives. Or whatever.

People aren't all "blind." They just simply can't afford a PS3. Look at what happened with recent holiday sales. I will have to buy my PS3 on my own, so you are damn sure I'm waiting for a price drop! I know it's got great features, but a lot of people including myself can't fork it out right away ;)

Everyone needs to play Lost Odyssey! Any opposition to this and I will have to just say, "If it's a fight you want, you got it!"

Nintendo sales slow down during the slow months... Shock.

The 360 is doing fine, hopefully Microsoft will fine a system seller this or next year.

Probably will get a cut, if only because Sony are getting one too.

Tease.

Price drop for Nintendo will be a last resort.

First software, then bundles/colors, then price drop.

I think it might happen later this year, but there is a chance they'll wait until next year. Anyone who's saying Nintendo will react with a price drop first is out of the loop.

There is no super HD Wii and Nintendo does not have to bite the bullet. Now if Sony dropped the price (which is the barrier to entry for most people, myself included) then MS may follow. It depends on how focused MS is on profitability. They may ride it out till NATAL or they may just think screw it and knock $100 of thier machine. Thier will be no price drop from Nintendo simply because they will throw software, bundles, colours, marketing tricks, and anything else they think will help before price drops. Remember, Nintendo doesn't care about the console war and don't care who sells more, they care for profit and profit alone.

Like hte others said, there will not be a Wii pricedrop anytime soon, the holiday would be the earliest but really, new colors in others/VS and bundles will be the first to go. And we would have had an announcement by now if that were the case.

But the wii should not matter in this case. DSlover already said, Nintendo doesn't care about marketshare and frankly, the competitors don't care for the wii (officially, I believe they look at the wii for various reasons but do not acknowledge it). MS and Sony both stated it is in a wholly different market. It would be like MS reacting to a DS or apple pricedrop witht he X360... ain't going to happen
