Forums - Microsoft - Should I go through with this?

So a friend of mine has a Xbox 360 that has the E-74 error message and he called Microsoft support to get it fixed, but since he doesn't have a receipt, they are charging him for it, so he bought a new one. He told me that his xbox 360 is a Halo 3 edition so obviously it came out in late 2007 so it should still be covered by the 3 year warranty correct? I told him that I could get it fixed and he is offering to sell it to me for 60 dollars with a wireless control. Should I do it? Would MS still repair it for free because its a Halo 3 edition Xbox (I guess he forgot to mention that to the Customer Support person) ?

Bonus: If MS does offer to repair it, would they send me back another Halo 3 edition Xbox 360 or would it be a regular Pro? I rather not have a dark green xbox if I had a choice.

Why would MS ask for a receipt?  They don't care where you bought it from, only when it was made (not when or where purchased).

Yeah...after 3 times of sending it in, I've never had Microsoft ask me for a receipt...

GOTY Contestants this year: Dead Space 2, Dark Souls, Tales of Graces f. Everything else can suck it.

Well, that's what he told me, so he had a bricked Xbox for like 2 months. I guess for verification that he bought it less than 3 years ago.

Your lying or your friend is lying to you (personally don't care which, just saying).

Again, MS doesn't care about receipts, they only care about the number on the back of your console.

LOL lying? I'm not lying and I doubt he is as well, he had a bricked Xbox for 2 months and was mad that he would have to pay (forgot the amount) to get it fixed. Anyways, thanks. I guess I should go through with it then.

Then he didn't call Microsoft. He called wherever he bought it from.

Yeah, I'm not trying to be offensive, I'm just saying the story is flat out wrong.  Sorry, I just see bullshit and I call it.

Again, I really don't care if either of you are lying I just know somebody is getting the story wrong because MS won't ask for a receipt.

Yea MS never ask for the receipt only the serial number of the 360. Since he got it in 2007 it's still under warranty so MS will fix it for free. You will get the same 360 back but it will have a jasper chip inside. And it doesn't matter what model 360 you have, every thing is under the same warranty.

So either your friends lying to you or he didn't call MS. If he's lying to you it may be because he voided his warranty some how and can't send it back to MS for repairs so he's trying to dump it on you. I would be careful.

The definitive evidence that video games turn people into mass murderers

he could have called before may or april. Before that microsoft was charging for e74 errors. However, now that is included and anybody that got charged for it should of had it refunded by now.

Yeah, as for the receipt thing, microsoft wouldn't even be able to check it. They don't have access to other stores internal records, that is why they take the serial number on the back of the box instead of asking for a reciept.

Also, they will give you a halo edition, they might gut the insides and replace it with new components, but you will get the same case back. If I were you, I would want them to gut the insides.
