Pretty much the exact same, they just removed the darker background in-game, and condensed it.

I'm a bit disappointed to be honest. Sure it looks nice, but why would sony redesign the xmb? It's fine as it is. Are they doing this because of the xbox 360's new dashboard?

That would look really slick to bring up while in-game. While it's nice to have the full xmb in-game to be able to select something like a video to play on your hard drive and have it automatically quit the game and go straight into the video, the current in-game XMB doesn't really need to display all the icons if you can't use them and it's usually slow in loading everything up (though I haven't seen 2.8 in action yet and I'm probably going to wait a while to download it).

How is this a disappointment... how the hell does improvement hurt? It's just fan made anyways

OT: If SONY did redesign the in game XMB, they should absolutely revamp the entire XMB to match it otherwise it would look quite silly IMO...

Anywhos if the XMB overall gets a revamp matching this or something similar, PS3 will be the sexiest console confirmed... haha
