Forums - Microsoft - If there is a Gen2 360, how long?

I'm wondering if Microsoft will be making a gen 2 360 console like the PS2 did... slimmer design, cooler, not as power hungry...  I don't know what the install base was when the Playstation went from the Brick to the Slimline but I'm guessing it was probably a lot more than the current 360 install base.  What's the chance of a Gen 2 slimmer design and if so, when you suspect they would do it?

I hate trolls.

Systems I currently own:  360, PS3, Wii, DS Lite (2)
Systems I've owned: PS2, PS1, Dreamcast, Saturn, 3DO, Genesis, Gamecube, N64, SNES, NES, GBA, GB, C64, Amiga, Atari 2600 and 5200, Sega Game Gear, Vectrex, Intellivision, Pong.  Yes, Pong.

Would you trust them to make something that small to be of quality ? imo the lack the experience in hardware to pull it of the right way.

I just hope for an $100 price cut next spring to match Sony's price cut :D

I thought you were asking how long until they release the next xbox!

I just don't think that it's gonna happen.  The slimmer design will only happen when the die size of chips gets a lot smaller, i.e in 4-5 years. The sliim design that you are talking about will make the whole thing hotter b/c the whole thing will have the same insides but a more compact design. In fact, I would think that the compactness of the current design that is causing some big-time heating problems.

Microsoft seems to be taking the constantly update it approach. HDMI, 65 nm, etc. I expect there might be a cosmetic change at some point but, until they need something to revive sales numbers I don't see it happening.

Once they get more of the X360 to a 65nm process, I think they'll goto a newer design.

MS knows that there are massive heat problems with certain areas of the X360. Why not re-design it (and kill the power brick too), and make it alot cheaper to make?

IMO, we could/should see a re-design for next years Christmas.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

You do realize, of course, that Microsoft doesn't make the 360?  They contracted design and development to one of those new-fangled contract electronics manufacturing company thingamajigs.  I suspect that they won't give as much leash next time around...

Because a more compact space means that more units of heat will be spread out over a smaller volume of air inside the console, which means that a slimmer redesign would make the whole thing hotter.  RROD epidemic all over again.

why not.

But I thought the "falcon" was supposed to be a sort of "Xbox360 II"

Time to Work !
