Forums - Nintendo - Malstrom: Momentum

I am not sure what to make of this latest posting. Because it basically means that Malstrom is saying the same thing as everyone else -- which is not something that he normally does.

Now let's go back to the details. I have asked this many times, but how does a game that sells 3M get called a "failure"? How does a game that outsells its predecessor get called a "failure"? AC:CF Wii sold 3M WW and 1.13M in Japan -- more than AC for the GC. Similarly, SMG outsold Sunshine in Japan as well as globally.

Now some might say -- that is to be expected as it is on 2x the install base. But less than 50 PS2 games have sold more than AC -- over a much longer time on a console with 2x the sales of the Wii.

The truth is that the Wii sales have slowed, even stalled. But it is not as if the PS3 and Xbox 360 are selling like hotcakes. Most weeks, the Wii is claiming close to if not 50 percent market share. To quote Bill Clinton "It's the economy stupid!"

The unemployment rate in the EU and US are both over 9 percent. It is an astronomically high (for the country) 5 percent in Japan. Folks worried about having jobs don't buy consoles!!

I am not going to say that Nintendo does not make mistakes. I am not going to say I would like to see more out of Nintendo. But I am going to say that it is not fair (or realistic) to expect Nintendo to supply 80 percent of the top sellers for its console while Sony and Microsoft generally only supply 20 percent.

Finally, even with this recent dip, the Wii is still tracking ahead of the PS2 and DS.

Its not a perfect piece but it actually does raise some interesting points. Perhaps Malstrom is following his own advice and providing substance rather than fluff, banter and hate?

Squlliam likes it bcoz Malstrom hinted at Nintendo's business failures.

Squilliam said:
No I liked it because:

A: It wasn't negative towards any party really.

B: It was shorter and more to the point, so it has a better fluff/content ratio.

C: It provides an interesting perspective outside of the recession as to why the Wii sales are thus. It doesn't mean hes right, but it does mean he raises some good points.

This and another thing: it looks like finally Malstrom discovered that in times of crisis Nintendo could use those dirty, stinking, cursed hardcore gamers whose he previously wished the extinction

The only thing that never changes is his attitude to think he's Nintendo's saviour, but we can't do anything about this, his EULA says we must accept him "as is"...

Not sure if serious, but what ever.

The "hardcore" would never accept Nintendo. Nintendo should never please these people as they will never accept Nintendo, even if they did cater only to them. Also, Nintendo will be fine either way. Even without momentum, they are still whipping the floor with their competators (pretty sad actually).

Half joking, seriously speaking, but in a joking tone, as I can't really stay totally serious when Malstrom is involved.

But putting Malstrom aside, maybe hardcore PS3 and XB gamers will hate Wii forever, but a part of hardcore PC gamers could accept it, and most former Nintendo hardcores too. A lot of them already accept it as a casual complement, but they could like more hardcore Wii games too, if well done. And let's not forget that share of gamers that, whatever the platform, start as casuals, but with time start looking for harder challenges and become part-time or totally hardcore.

It's pretty simple. Once Wii launched, the only game Nintendo themselves made that used the motion controller well was Mario Kart, and that was a pretty small integration. They haven't beaten Wii Sports yet. (Metroid Prime 3 might count but it's not really Nintendo internal who made that.)

Now WM+ has launched and only 3 games supported it at launch (all sports), with only two more announced to use it this year. Nintendo's own game didn't make launch, there was no real fuss over the launch, and Nintendo has no other games announced that use it. Right now it looks like it'll be another one-and-done like the Zapper or Wii Speak or even arguably the Balance Board - no internal Nintendo teams have really made use of these devices outside of the franchises they launched with.

Thats the one thing that makes you go, "WHAT IN THE WORLD ARE NINTENDOS DEV TEAMS WORKING ON?!"

...Really it's a mixed bag, I kinda like how you always know, or have a clue what Sony is up too, BUT I also like the *in Reggie voice* Surpises that Nintendo will spring, example: Metoroid: Other M...

If you ask me, it DOES seem like they are setting themselves up for a price cut...

Not that I necessarily agree with him, but I think Malstrom would say AC:CF 'failed' because it didn't sell like the DS version sold, therefore the franchise is shrinking. It's the same argument he uses with Super Mario Galaxy, even though it is also outselling the last console Mario game.
