I'm so glad that I bought the 360 because I'm such a RPG lover. Who would thought that the Xbox 360 will have more RPGs then the PS3 and the PS3 have more shooters then the 360.

LMAO....what?? i'm pretty sure the 'shooter box' wins in both departments.

Nice article. Section off four different platforms as being inconsequential to the argument, just leave the two lowest selling platforms, and have a pissing contest between them like usual. Reasoning why the DS isn't under consideration? It would defeat every console and handheld so brutally that it wouldn't have made an engaging article. Really this wasn't an article made for fans of RPG games, because those fans would want to know where the best RPGs are, regardless of platform. It was made for those that get kicks over "PS3 vs. 360: Who wins this round?" articles.

Or perhaps because consoles and handhelds are always considered seperately. Just like PC games are only rolled into a discussion to rain on people's parades.

What's your reasoning for seperating them though? This isn't a sales discussion. We're talking about which has the best RPGs, which in my mind is open to any platform that has RPGs to begin with. Obviously handhelds getting prime attention from key RPG publishers like Square-Enix and Atlus has been felt throughout the console world, so yes I'd say they count just plenty. Want to know why a console doesn't have Dragon Quest IX like usual, because a handheld has it. Want to know why the latest Shin Megami Tensei game isn't on a console like usual, because a handheld has it. Want to know why people say Square's output is lousy? It's because they're only playing their console games, not the handheld ones.

Consider them seperately though. It's obvious why that has to be. It isn't to benefit the handhelds, I assure you that.

Lol. Handhelds and consoles are almost always considered seperately because they're handhelds, not consoles. They are two different mediums. Who cares that the wii has sold the most. That's because they tapped into the non gamer demographic with games that have regressed from where games have evolved. You seem to be mad that this discussion only includes the ps3 and 360. One of the major reasons for your anger is because they are the two lowest selling consoles. This isn't a sales discussion you say, but you're the one who brought sales into the discussion. Do you know why they are the two lowest selling consoles? They make games for us! The people on this site. I suppose you agree COD, Halo and Gears of war 2 are the best shooters of all time. They've sold more than any other. ALL OTHER SHOOTERS STINK!! Right?

The main reason I exclude handhelds aside from common sense is that I want to play my most beloved rpgs on a console. I don't want the games to be held back on a handheld. Handhelds are not made to do your serious gaming on. They are made to game on the go. Fend off boredom when going to events you don't want to go to but have to on account of politics. Sure, you can sometimes do some serious gaming on a handheld but a handheld is not where you'd prefer to do it. If you have a high end gaming pc and a high end gaming laptop. Most people would choose their PC to play their dearest games. The only reason you brought handhelds into the discussion is because you dislike one of the HD consoles or both idk.

ps. To anyone, I do not hate handhelds. I love handhelds and love gaming on them but I just find it absurd how people will try to pit them against our main gaming devices.

As of this moment, the 360 has the most candidates for the best RPGs of this generation on it. Mass Effect is a large one. Throw in others also (outside of SRPGs) and this is a strong case why.

HOWEVER, the Wii is expected to make LARGE inroads here, particularly in the JRPG front.

Well, at least it looks like things will be such that the PS3 and Wii should have enough to keep owners of these consoles happy.

I know! Lets ignore 200 million current generation consoles then make a comparison to get hits!!!

i swear any monkey could work in video game journalism.....

BTW, DS + PSP own the RPG department so rediculously its not even worthy of a comparison!

bullshit S.T.A.G.E., IGN did not say X360 is the King of RPGs because they only compared the 360 with the PS3. What about the PC, DS, PSP, Wii, etc...?!

yeah the PC has a lot of 2009 exclusives.

I think this is a pretty decent list of RPGs for one console"

Some of them aren't exclusives and are also available on pc and playstation 3. Multiplatforms don't give merit to a platform because you can play them on other platforms.

nobody expected the Xbox360 to get such a massive third party support in the first place.

And you can play all of those games on the Xbox360. You can't play all of them on the PS3 and you can't play all of them on the PC. That's why this is the Xbox360-list. Go ahead, make a PC and a PS3 one. You can use multiplat games as well. But this list is about the Xbox360.

ok, here's what seperates handhelds from consoles(I'm sure there's more):

1) Audience - While there is a great deal of overlap, the benefits of consoles to many, is te ability to relax in your living room and play on a big screen. I could play games exclusively on my PC, but a console has the big screen and the ability to play from the couch.

2) Technical capabilities - console games obviously have much greater budgets/graphics. They're worlds apart, though handheld games can look pretty fantastic on those little screens. Also, due to the small discs, a handheld game would have to be much smaller. (though I'm sure they can scale relatively due to reduced technical requirements)

3) Controls - handhelds generally have more limited controls - for instance no sticks, because they're designed to be flat.

In short, yes portables have better RPGs than consoles, because the small screens and limited controls don't really impact them. Meanwhile, consoles would have the advantage in the shooter spectrum. Each side has areas where they would completely steamroll the other, it's not even close. But rather than always mention such vastly different peices of equipment together, they are slotted into different categories. The same reason these discussions are generally PS3vs360. Wii has tons of fun/"blue ocean" games, PS3/360 have graphical powerhouse games with intense movie sequences. Why slot everything into one category? If we did, then we can stop talking about the Wii too, because the DS sales have buried it.

You're not saying anything differently from me. You're saying that the portables are so chock full of RPGs that it gives them an unfair advantage and it's no longer fun to put them in comparison, so you chop them out and put only the platforms that are performing relatively close to eachother other in the genre, which are the two HD consoles. I get it.

However, looking at the article itself, it's obvious where it's intentions are, which are exactly what I originally said. This is nothing more than a PS3 vs. 360 pissing contest, which they seem to have an ongoing series of articles dedicated to called Grudge Match. So really it wouldn't have mattered how similar or relevant any other platform would be to an argument. It's going to be 360 vs. PS3 the same reason why so many other articles are, it draws in the most hits, and adding additional players dilutes the article's ability to pull in that internet fanbase that loves the 360/PS3 wars. If this were really an article made for RPG fans, it would feature as many platforms as possible. This is for the console wars fan and nothing more.

Um no. The reasoning for this PS3 vs 360 "pissing contest (as you put it), is because the PS2 took all of Nintendos major RPG's and ruled for two generations. We're focusing on consoles here. The 360 is the only one with major RPG's. If the 360 wasn't around with a good variety of RPG's, Nintendo would still be getting spanked  in that department. Second of all, JRPG's aren't even popular on the Wii. By sales, they are popular on the DS. The DS is a portable, so it doesn't count.

-Does the PC look like a console to you? Besides if you want a game for it, just steal it.

-Does the PSP look like a console to you?

-Does the DS look like a console to you?

-The Wii is out of the race because they don't have anymore major RPG's that the hardcore support. Sony took their major franchise, and all their good RPG's are all on the DS.

JRPGs and WRPGs: 360

SRPGs: PS3

Err what? Disgaea 3 and Valkyria Chronicles?Well then I guess your right on console for VC along since I dont even think Wii or 360 have one. (Not counting PS2 Wii port of NIS game)

Though I think adding the SRPG is a little defensive.

OT:The 360 easily has the best RPG this generation since  it does have a good variety of both WRPG and JRPG. 2nd could be clost between PS3/Wii since PS3 has WRPG but barley any JRPG and Wii has JRPG but no WRPG. Bethesda game is in the works though.

Anyways its hard to argue otherwise. Yes 360 has the best lineup for RPG....lucky bastards.

A little defensive? that's all? That's like saying:

FPS and TPS: 360

NDFPS: PS3

(NDFPS = Netherlands Developed First Person Shooter)

No, it likes comparing a RPGs across widely varying gameplay mechanics. SRPGs are not like WRPGs but can usually find common ground with JRPGs.

@ DirtyP

Demon's Souls is excellent and one of the best RPGs I've played in a long time.

Currently I'm playing Tales of Vesperia and Eternal Sonata on the 360, and i have to say its one of the best 1/2 punches in RPG gaming I've experienced.

That being said, I really think people are putting way too much stock in Final Fantasy Vs. 13. It isn't going to sell anywhere near as much as FF13 because the name is going to throw people off. It isn't the hardcore fans that decide a sales victory, its how well the game can appeal to a broader audience.

Whichever system markets their exclusives best is going to come out on top when it comes to RPG's. And right now it would take an epic upset for Mass Effect 2 to be knocked from its hype train throne.

The hardcore are the minority, but they are the bulk of sales for major games.
