Forums - Gaming - What do you think the console fail rates are?

I'll chip in my two cents...

Wii: I know for a fact that 1% of the initial shipment of Wii's at launch had the "Green Pixel" issue. There was a trace amount green artifacts in some cutscenes in some games (Res4, for example), and it was determined to be an overheating GPU issue. I had this problem happen to me personally, and I just walked into the NOC HQ (since I live close by) and had my Wii hotswapped for a fresh one. Funny enough, the one I swapped with had a bad Disc Drive issue. I sent that one for repairs (all this was free by the way) and when it came back to me, it had another bad disc drive in it. After walking into the HQ again and inquiring about it, they informed me there was a shipment of bad disc drives and any "repaired" Wii's for that month had the issue. Again, I got the issue fixed and have been a happy camper ever since.

I have a friend who had a bad Flash Drive issue in his Wii, and rarely his data will get wiped. That's another issue, but again it's incredibly rare and he's the only case I've heard of it (he didn't think it was covered in his warranty and didn't get it repaired, even though it was covered).

Currently, I've heard nothing about Wii's randomly failing.

PS3: I remember hearing at launch that the failure rate of PS3 was 5-8%. I have no idea what the YLOD is, but I've never heard/seen a PS3 fail since after launch until up to this point. They seem sturdy and reliable (save this new YLOD issue)

Xbox 360: The failure rates of the 360 have been dropping ever since launch, but are still incredibly high in terms of quality standards. For the fitrst year and a half the rate was 33%. It fell to 30%, then a little longer after that 20-25%. The lowest and most recent rate I've heard was 15%, but that does not include the E74 issue.

I have 7 friends who own 360's, and every last one of them has had to get theirs replaced at least once. One of them had to get theirs replaced 3 times. All the other guys are pretty much just "waiting" for theirs to die again.

By life end:

  • Wii- 100 million+
  • Xbox360- 35~40 million
  • PS3- 30 million
  • PSP- 30~32 million ------------- FAILURE
  • NDS- 85~90 million (Skeptical)  - FAILURE
  • NDS- 100 million+ (Optimistic) -- Success!

I can't take you seriously with that sig. When did you make that?

Only your Wii and DS predictions make any sense.

I would say that the PS3s tend to die outside of warranty whilst the Xbox 360s tend to die inside of warranty, so the rate of unwarranted failures are:

Wii 1%
PS3 8%
Xbox 360 3%

The Squilliam failure rate is also increasing!

Do you have warranty?

My failure rate is 80% but at least its improving!

No warranty is implied or inferred for my posts.

Tease.

My Wii that I bought at Launch died after about 20 minutes of playing. Toys R Us took it back but they never called me back to give me a new one and it somehow took me like 3 months to get another one from them.

To all the people in here (which seems to be everyone) who is claiming that PS3 has a higher failure rate than Wii, care to share where you are getting this information from? Or are you just making wild estimations out of nowhere?

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=yellow+lights+of+death&aq=f&oq=&aqi=g2

Check it out...YLOD

I know what the YLOD is, but I am just wondering where everyone is pulling out these estimations. We've heard about the YLOD. We've also heard about RROD and Wii's failing. RROD has always been kindof in the spotlight especially since MS extended the warranty. But how are people automatically assuming there are more YLOD on PS3 than failing Wii's?

Because you never hear about Wii's breaking. I haven't heard anybody say their Wii has broken untill this thread, whereas I have heard lots of users say they have the YLOD and even more who have the RROD. RROD is on the decline and YLOD is on the rise.

Ever feel as if that might just be your personal experience? Just because you have heard something more than another does not mean it's true.

As for your second point, I don't even see how YLOD rising and RROD declining has anything to do with Wii vs. PS3 failure rates. Yes, RROD is on the decline. Down is the only way it can go from the initial 33% failure rate that some sources were reporting. But YLOD on the rise? That's another point that I think you simply made up and are using as a fact.

lol, what thread were you reading? This thread is about console falure rates, not Wii vs. PS3 failure rates.

Since you clearly did not read my original post, I bolded the part that has to do with Wii vs. PS3.

wii: under 1%

Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.

Near the start of this generation, when this site was just a little baby. I never changed my predictions.

I don't understand why people are constantly revising their "predictions". They're not so much predicting as they are simply going along with what is currently happening in the VG world, and adjusting the number. Of course you're going to be "right" at the end of it.

Those numbers are what I thought what would happen years ago, and I'm sticking with them until the very end.

while.

while i seen wii suffer from fan and lens problems (1) and ps3 suffering from lens problems (2)

pretty much 100% of my friends have gotten some kind of problem from scratching disc to complete dead.

though out of ten only 2 got a complete dead console the others 8 were able to fix it by xclamp.

If I had to make a random guess...

Wii: 1 - 2%
PS3: 2 - 3%
360: 20 - 25%

I have another one:

Wii: About what people think it is.
Xbox 360: Less than what most people think it is.
PS3 Definately more than what most people think it is.
