Forums - Website Topics - Why everyone in this site like rpg so much?

Are you surprised that a video game website with charts and numbers attracts people who like RPG's??

This is what i was thinking. I figure this site attracts more intellectual gamers, or at least more so than you'd expect on GameFAQs message boards, IGN message boards, etc. So as a result you get more of a fanbase that enjoys a more intellectual gameplay expirience, or at least something that isn't as reaction-based as an FPS, not that we dont enjoy those either.

Me - i love my RPGs but not for storyline or character development - i honestly just like seeing my character get stronger as i progress through the game, which i feel doesnt happen enough in most other games other than simply getting better at the game.

RPGs are a staple of the traditional "hardcore" demographic, which are the primary visitors to sites like this one. If you like RPGs, that's a pretty good indicator that you fit into the traditional demographic -- especially if you're a westerner, as opposed to Japanese, Korean, etc., where gaming is more widely accepted.

The good WRPGs deserves all the praise they get on this website. On the other hand, JRPG, not so much.

Everyone is a strong word.

Traditional RPG's (JRPG) are a dying genre and I would be willing to bet next generation we will barely see any.

We will see tons. Just on the portables where artifact games as Malstrom calls them seem to congregrate. Because they are cheaper to develop such long expensive content filled games on portable systems.

IMO any one who thinks JRPG's are dying simply hasn't looked at the libraries of PSP and DS.

In repsonse to the Topic:

I think that the internet isn't the place where most people talk about games.  Only the really core lovers of niche games generally.  It is why you will hear so much love for them online but no necessarily in real life.  Remember the internet is not an mirror of the real world.  Mention Ico and most real people would think you are crazy on the internet you shall hear praises abound. Or mention the Wii series to the snobcore internet crowd and it's often scoffed at but in real life is much loved(It is the best selling game of all time).

Yes, sorry, I should have specified: Traditional RPG's area dying breed on consoles.

I think they still have their place on handhelds because they don't have to have the huge overblown budget on those.  RPG's on consoles are just getting too expensive to make for too little sales.  Final Fantasy might survive, but not much else.

Making a 20+ hour game is difficult and time consuming enough, but when people expect 100+ hours that stay interesting for 100+ hours, large custom soundtrack to fill a 100+ hour game, and full CG movies it just isn't feasable anymore.

b/c its one of the best genre's in gaming today and is not overrated like the FPS crap

Maybe because they are good games?

They arent boring and repetitive like FPS games?

Some have great stories and memorable characters?

Take your pick. Why, what would you like us to talk about?

Oh yeah, there is no repetition in RPGs for 60+ hours. They always have the same story, some kid who wants to be an adventurer and ends up saving the world. I enjoy WRPGs, but I feel like I've played everything the JRPG genre has to offer already.

And you don't think WRPG's repeat just as much with being a space marine/ knight out to save the kingdom/galactic whatever?

Alpha Protocolis definitely a new step, but it's not like WRPG's don't have their own settings they usually end up in.
