Forums - Gaming - Five reasons why NSMB Wii will completely crush its next best competitor

From a quality perspective any claim that New Super Mario Bros. Wii will be better or worse is just going to result in pointless arguments ... From a sales perspective I don't think there is really any question about it. When you look at the 4 player Mario games this generation, the sales have been absolutely huge, and I think that 5 Million sales for a 2D Mario platfomer with 4 player co-operative gameplay is (about) the lowest I can realistically expect this game to sell. Has there been a non Nintendo platformer released in the past 10 years that sold 5+ Million units?

Why is it guaranteed? Because SMG sales are really low?
I agreewith you btw, I just didn't know there was strong evidence.

Trends of Mario games sales in Japan 2D vs 3D tend to show they have a preference for 2D Marios

Game Japan America Others
Super Mario Bros 3 3.84 9.69 3.75
Super Mario World 3.55 12.97 4.09
Yoshi's Island 1.77 1.68 0.67
Super Mario 64 1.92 6.87 3.1
Super Mario Sunshine   0.87 4.03 1.38
New Super Mario Bros 5.67 6.88 6.30
Super Mario Galaxy 1.04 4.15 2.79

You can see that Yoshi's Island sold very close to Mario 64 in Japan. Also for all 3D Marios, Japan accounts for around 15% of the WW sales but for Yoshi's Island and NSMB they represent 43% and 30% respectively.

Signature goes here!

I find that sad about the people here that says that NSMBW is copying LBP when:

1.-It was Super Marioi whom created the 2D platformers TO DATE

2.-Unless you are 15 years old we all know about the huge impact the Mario games had on the industry

3.-LBP is nothing but a desperate move to atttract famliies to the PS3 IMITATING Mario

LBP copied Mario. That's not an opinion THAT'S A FACT. Deal with it.

Knowing me, I may buy both marios, but I am way more excited about NSMBW because is a 2D mario game. Nothing compares to it. Since the NES days to the awesome DS game 2D marios are warranty of fun and quality. SMG2 may be fun like the first one but it would sell only the hardkorez.

How, exactly, did LBP copy Mario? Have you played LBP? I've played both, and I can safely say without any doubt that other than the fact they are both sidescrollers, they have nothing in common.

I suppose Contra copied Metroid, then? And WipEout copied Mario Kart?

@ the guy talking abotu braid

i love braid, but talk about different games

they have nothing to do with eachother

Last year's game of the year turned out to be Silent Hill : Shattered Memories (online GOTY was COD 6).  This year's GOTY leader to me is Heavy Rain.

I'll give you 10 reasons it won't:

1. Uncharted 2
2. Modern Warfare 2
3. Halo 3 ODST
4. Forza 3
5. Splinter Cell Conviction
6. Bioshock 2
7. Assassin's Creed 2
8. L4D2
9. Brutal Legend
10. Borderland

Now this is hardcore, only on PS360.

Maybe it is just me :)

Haha ten chances to include a platformer in there and missed every single time, if you want I can help you out

11. Ratchet and Clank A Crack in Time

Only on PS3... Believe!

Maxwell, I'm ashamed!

12. LittleBigPlanet Portable

You deserve a slap in the face with a wet sheep.

Opinions? He provided sales numbers and the only conclusion that can be logically derived from those numbers.

Quoted the wrong post?

6. It took a lesson from LittleBigPlanet
4 player coop and coopetition? Definitely took a lesson from LBP

You forgot that one

This element was in New Super Mario Bros. before Little Big Planet, it was just competitive instead of cooperative. Actually, they've had games like this since... a long time, actually. Four Sword Adventures is a good example.

LBP did not invent simultaneous co-op play in non-shooters.

Anyway.

LBP was a lot of fun! NSMBWii has its work cut out for it.

It clearly tried, they have a lot in common. You won't see only if you don't want. It just did end up not even close. All the features they add (costumization, the possibility of stickers during play - yackkk -, level creation, so on, are boring).

Oh, and to whomever says that it looks a DS game, or you being simply stupid, or you need glasses. And no... you can not like it, find it boring, stupid, whatever... but please don't make up excuses that are visibly just troling.
