Xbox 360 Falcon Chips Have Landed!

" It's what many have been waiting for. The new 65nm "Falcon" CPUs are found in the Halo 3 console. Besides being smaller, the 65nm chip is fifty percent less expensive to manufacture and apparently are more economic in heat output. Previous consoles featured a 90nm and have an abnormally high failure rate."

Question is how fast they will be spoted in Elites, Premiums and Cores. If true MS has a margin left to cut the price (don't say they will, but they could, e.g. counter Sony if needed).

sounds good, iv been waiting for this to happen, no i might seriously consider buying a 360. i wonder how long before theyr in aus..

I thought it was the GPU responsible for the majority of failures - and that they weren't getting a die-shrink?

Its also a bit sad that the Halo 360's are MORE expensive - yet cost less to make?

Hopefully the failure rate will be small. It wouldn`t suprise me if there are some folks having already some issues with their new Halo Xbox, but I also hope that it will not be the case. The Xbox deserves a better reputation. It will be very interesting to see how the 65nm chip can push the sales number if all the people who wait for a reliable Xbox will finally buy it.

As far as I understood just the heat, causing the motherboard to fail (soldering and the motherboard bends). But I guess knowbody knows excaxly exept MS.  The GPU should be allready replaced in the Units sold, as far as I know (there where a knews just before the price cut). Well and how does the cost to make a console reflect how much the consumer spend for it? I mean, if the consumer sees he is getting more value (special edition) and you make it cheaper, you have a problem after the special edition runs out and you are left on your normal consoles. They would seem overpriced.

I don't think this is going to have the impact people think it will unless other parts of the console changed too. I'm personally going to wait till someone does a more thorough look through of what all changed internally. The GPU as far as I understand has been the major problem although thats mostly due to two factors the poor airflow over it and the fact it was situated directly under the DVD drive. Maybe if the new CPU lets them divert more airflow to the GPU it might make a difference but the CPU wasn't the cause previously as tests showed it would hold pretty stable at around 55-60˚C however the GPU under normal conditions would get to 70-80˚C and it was thought that under very bad dust/hair whatever conditions could go as high as 90-95˚C. All this heat gets trapped under the DVD and the motherboard begins to bend causing the solder holding the GPU to break and then redring occurs. This is essentially the trick and the science behind why the towel trick works sometimes you cause the board to bend again and let it cool in hopes that the GPU will reseat itself properly. Hopefully for fans of the 360 they are now pulling heat away from the GPU more effectively but forgive me if I'm pessimistic for the time being.

Price cut imminent? (And I mean price cut, not the 50$ shit they did)

At the moment? Why? 360 sales are near Wii level in NA. As far as we know solid in europe. Well ok there is Japan but even a price cut won't help. I say they want to make enough money to have a solid positive number this fiscal year. They cut the price only if they need to (e.g. counter Sony).  Or put in other words: Keep always a joker on the hand unless you have desprete need for it.

^^ I meant holiday period or even further off. They certainly can afford more now.
