The 60GB PS3 model was a very valuable piece of hardware. It had everything, from wi-fi, backwards compatibility, flash card readers, SACD support, to even a built in Foreman grill(OK, not really that last one). Of course, it came at a premium - a $600 premium. As a result, in their on going quest to lower the price of the console, Sony started docking features one by one from the system. And it seems that the PS3 Slim, currently unannounced, will be continuing in this motion, removing even more non-gaming essentials from the platform.
According to an internet poster, Super_Secret, the PS3 Slim will be missing non-gaming features found in the current iterations of the PS3. The support for other opperating systems will be one such featured stripped from the console, as well as other hardware changes, including the on/off switch in the back of the console. While usually a message board poster would not be the greatest of sources, last week, Super_Secret did say that firmware 2.80 would be released on Wednesday, which reports from earlier today do confirm. Still, consider this one a rumor for now.
