I'll be the first to admit that for months I read these forums without any inclination to post and/or respond to anyone. Granted while certain fanboys were almost asking to get served I really didn't bother because it was almost hilarious to see some arguments being made attacking the Xbox 360.
Anyway, I recently made up an account, namely to pose one question to all you Microsoft owners.
Why in the hell am I supposed to care about Sony and the PS3?
It seems like E3 was a prime opportunity for a select minority to start attacking Microsoft for Project Natal and the "Weak" show offering. Infamous seemed like another talking point, as several threads poppsed up claiming it was the real deal, the cure to cancer; an actual moneytree! People attacked Prototype as the weaker game based on nothing but anecdotal evidence and cherrypicking reviews, even though it's multi-platform and actually helped Sony in some ways, proving that its still worth it to develop for the system.
But seriously, there comes a time in a system owners life when you should briefly take stock of what you don't have, and figure out whether or not it is worth the price of investment.
So I look at the 299$ competition and see nothing but a struggling giant. I see a very symbolic representation of what is wrong with Americas economy. I see a modded George Foreman Grill.
Some points.
- I've read during the last two months claims by people that "The PS3 was gaining momentum" and "soon to be outselling 360's". Well a couple issues with these claims.
1. From what I can research, the PS3 has not outsold the 360 in total sales since the systems inception. For the PS3 to catch up in 8+ million in sales , it would have to outsell the Xbox by 100k a month for 6 years + ,all the while the public deciding that Microsoft distributed the SARS virus and/or Swine Flu.
2. Sony is losing exclusives one by one. I found pure enjoyment reading some people discrediting the Metal Gear Solid game heading to 360 before any gameplay videos/screenshots have been released. Am I really inclined to believe that FFVersus13 is going to remain exclusive? By the time it is released 360 is probably going to be edging a 9 million + sales lead on the PS3. I mean right now , yes, Sony is more successful in Japan. But with FF13 being multi-platform , exactly how much is it going to push sales in either direction?
3. Unless Uncharted 2 literally cures babies of SIDS, I really am not going to be missing any awesome games coming out for the system. Yeah God of War 3 is probably going to be amazing but a lot has changed since GoW 2 came out in the industry; you can pretty much find a substitute for Mash-em-up's by going straight to the bargain bin nowadays.
4. Blu-Ray has not proven itself as the next baby jesus of media formats. If anything, slow retail sales of the hardware tells me that the future of media distribution is online and/or streaming, but that's pure speculation and meant for another thread.
5. Microsoft is in much better shape financially than Sony. It could lose money on its hardware for years and still be able to go strong, even though its mission, and only mission at this point is to sink the Playstation.
So I ask you, dear more experienced VGchartz forum poster,
WHY SHOULD I CARE ABOUT SONY AND/OR WHAT THE PLAYSTATION DOES?
I really want to know. Should I care that the cell processor has limitless potential but is hampered by poor RAM implementation? Should I be envious that you can Mod a PS3 to cook hamburgers? What is it exactly that I need to be concerned about, because right now its a whole lot of nothing.
