MGS4 sold more than MGS3, when the PS2 had over 100M users, and the PS3 was at like 12-14M (forget exactly)

/thread

Um...MGS3 came out during a time when the PS2 started losing value. MGS4 came out around the time PS3 was low in value and helped gave it true value. This is in the beginning of the PS3's lifespan. It was expected. The value of a systems games in the last couple years of its life cycle, relies upon dedicated gamers and late purchasers of the system. the bulk of the buyers, most likely will have fallen out of the loop. PS2 had a lot of casual users who fell out of the loop after a couple of years.

Well that's simply not true. MGS3 came out in 2004, possibly the strongest year that the PS2 had. What really killed it was coming out at the same time as Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and Halo 2.

I just checked and that is quite true. In terms of sales, it was a peak year for the PS2.

As far as the average player is concerned, yes. Of course developers are happy.

Exactly. So MGS3 launched during the absolute peak of the PS2's popularity. It had more sales potential than in any other year. So you're just wrong.

All my 360 friends only bought the console because they could get it hacked, i.e get tons of games for free. Im also leaning towards geting a new Arcade model, just so that i could try out more games that im not sure i'd want to spend full price on.

I mean, who in their right mind buys Kung Fu Panda at full price when they can just download it.

selling more hardware is great if you make money on the hardware.

Like the wii or 360 for example.

Sony is make money off of hardware. Blu Ray stand alones to be exact. All thanks in part to the PS3. :)

? you're saying that sony would make more money if they sold more consoles to people who are going to pirate the games anyways?

I agree that the success of BR is due to the ps3 and acknowledge the difficulty of doing this while at the same time maintaining a pretty good market share, but I don't think that at this time more ps3s are going to help the BR market. They did in the past, but that battle is over.

its funny how the last gen pirated era was able to sell more games than this gen with no pirated games

The battle has been over. HD-DVD is dead. Blu Ray survived and it lives on in the PS3. Ever watched 'Tropic Thunder"? They talk about it in the movie.

look at the psp and the pc markets.=dead.

Exactly.

It may not show right now, but I'm perfectly sure that an un-hacked PS3 is helping software sales in the long run.

And I hope no consoles get hacked in the next gen.

Me too, just so eveyone can finally learn that piracy has nothing to with software sales.  People who pirate either wouldn't have bought the game in the first place or they would have bought used.  The only people who will make more money if piracy comes to an end are Gamestop and its ilk.

But that's a mith.

I am a pirate myself, and all my friends are pirates, so I no how pirates think and act.

I havent bothered to mod my X360 yet, therefor i buy some X360 games. For PC it's another story (i only buy some PC games for CD keys).

So if for some reason Id mod my X360, I would hardly buy any games anymore.

This is the sad truth. Piracy severly hurts game sales. Not much to debate IMO.

Thank you. I'm sick of some of these people talking like they know the mind of a pirate.

Hey it's just what the research on the matter shows... and current economic theory.  Because some people are somewhat antisocial i don't know what to tell you.

Of course he's also from a country that charges something like 100 bucks before conversion for a game.

Gamers are antisocial my friend. I'd like to see this research too, as long as it relates to pirating and not physically stealing.

Yes...I said you were right. Does it help your self esteem to repeat it? Please don't be redundant.
