Forums - Sony - Harris Interactive survey shows Blu Ray interest slowing

A new survey from Harris Interactive came out and one of questions was about Blu Ray.  Blu Ray interest, as measured among those who do not yet own a BD player, seems to be significantly down from last year:

  2008 2009
Likely (NET) 9 7
Somewhat Likely / Not Likely (NET) 91 93
   Somewhat Likely 26 17
Not at all likely 65 75

http://blogs.zdnet.com/BTL/?p=20062

The percent of people likely to get a BD player has dropped, and the percent of people "somewhat likely" to get a BD player is much lower than last year.  Now, 3/4ths of all people without BD players are "not at all likely" to get a BD player.  And in coming years, optical media will decline in popularity and usage compared to Internet HD, satellite and cable HD, etc.

Also, nearly half of these adults own an HD TV, up significantly from last year at 35%.

This is bad news for Sony, a company really struggling to get a profit out of its home entertainment division.

Very, very slowly.

The biggest growth I've seen isn't in terms of sales, but it is in terms of revenue compared to DVD.  When you are selling a DVD movie at $10 and a BD at $25, each BD sold is 2.5x as much revenue.  You can skew the numbers pretty easily by releasing either a cheaper DVD or a more expensive BD disc, and a lot of BDs I've seen start out at $30 or some other such outrageous price.

most people i know are waiting for blu ray players to be like 100 bucks or so

or they have ps3 already

its all price

when blu ray is cheap as dvd, everyone will buy it. till then tho . . .

Last year's game of the year turned out to be Silent Hill : Shattered Memories (online GOTY was COD 6).  This year's GOTY leader to me is Heavy Rain.

WAT? I just saw a survey not too long ago which indicated that the % of people who wanted Blu Ray were increasing. Did they conduct this survey in Redmond, WA?

Tease.

They asked less than 200 people? how credible is it then?

This survey question didn't mention price.  It was just gauging interest in buying a BD device  this year.  And interest looks to be down quite a bit compared to last year.

It's not surprising since that's what many have been predicting.  In the time since last year, Internet HD video has increased significantly, satellite 1080p video on demand has increased, Internet bandwidths are making major leaps, and a lot of companies are offering HD video in 3Mbps or 6Mbps.  MLB.tv for example, has decent looking HD at 3Mbps.  I was skeptical until I saw it.

Video compression is still improving, average Internet bandwidths are increasing, and streaming HD over the Internet is just so much cheaper and easier than buying a BD.

yea.. a online poll from APRIL 13 TO THE 21's which only had 2,400 Response's ..YEA LOOK AT PAGE ONE OF THAT PDF...for their data...

"a Harris Interactive survey (PDF)"

since that poll was taken..Blu-Ray adoption has increased world wide vs' "just the US" old statistics for an out of date data to prove a point..yup../end sarcasm

these anti-Blu-Ray post's are getting rather silly now ...since JUNE is after APR where is your Upto date Anti-Blu-Ray updated stats..wait there is none why because its the same data the ANIT-Blu-Ray pundant's have been useing since Blu-Ray won. An it's Mainly from the HD DVD supporter's. get over it already.

normaly i would not be so negative on anyone's post but this is getting rather silly because it's not even upto date Data , and it does not pertain to what the REST OF THE WORLD views on Blu-Ray's Viability as a format.

the 2,400 people in the US does not even represent the US as a whole and upto date DATA on Blu-Ray even in the US show otherwise from other sources are showing Blu-Ray's Growth to be solid due to the fact that
million's are greater than 2,400 people.

I AM BOLO

100% lover "nothing else matter's" after that...

ps:

Proud psOne/2/3/p owner.  I survived Aplcalyps3 and all I got was this lousy Signature.

Sales are up so what does this BS survey prove? That it's a BS survey that's what.

Pretty much all polls use a small base of people to try and judge what the general consensus is BTW.

Anyways, I would be in the "Somewhat likely" category, but in the "if the player prices ever drop to a reasonable level" sub-category.
