I don't understand the reviewers on this one. This is one of the most awesome experiences I've had in awhile (PC version).
1.) The parkour is fluidity at it's finest. The best thing that this game has to say about itself is the fact that Mercer's ability to run over anything is just, well, easy. In a lot of games that have parkour (i.e., Mirror's Edge and inFamous), it takes a bit of effort to master the running to make it fluid. While purists might say that the running in Prototype is "stupidly easy", I say that's actually a great thing. I get to focus on other things while watching Mercer do crazy things.
2.) You get the feeling that you're really a superhero. Some games cater to you having some superpowers and whatnot, but you're still at the mercy of some gameplay mechanics. In this game, you literally have all the power in the world at your disposal. Ability to jump over anything, run over anything, and glide over the city at 100mph? Check. Wolverine claws? Check. Slam them underground and create giant razor sharp spikes? Check. 1000 ft elbow drop on a tank? Check. Turn your arm into a whip that decapitates everyone around you? Check. 500 tentacles bursting from your body to impale half the city? Check. Shapeshift into anyone in the game? Check. This game gives you power, and doesn't limit your usage of it.
3.) The feelings of speed, impact, height, vertigo, and the like are represented well. I don't know how the game does it, but when I fall off a building (with no real fear of dying, of course), I still get that sick feeling in my stomach that comes when, for example, you're falling in a rollercoaster, even after you've fallen off a building for the hundredth time. Even after you've run through the entire city, you still get the thrill of speed as Mercer sprints over cars and buildings. Punching a tank makes you really feel the impact and power of that punch. Perhaps it's a combination of excellent sound and graphic effects, but I really appreciate the ride.
4.) Combat is satisfying, for the most part. Being in the middle of crossfire, knowing you're public enemy number 1, and wasting entire military bases fluidly is just fun as hell. There's just no lull in the action. You can change powers on the fly and just go crazy with what you have at your disposal. And the AI just will not give up on you. The ugly alien infected dudes are relentless in their attack, and will go absolutely nuts on you if you try to run away. I just wish that the marines were less idiotic.
5.) The story, well, is alright. I'm on the fence on this one. It's kinda ok, but also far too cheesy and well, old. Won't spoil anything, but lets just say it feels like an old movie with a hyped up super powered dude. The voice acting's horrid quality doesn't help matters on that department either.
I don't really disagree with respected reviewers on many games, but I have to give this game a 9.5/10 at the least. It's freaking awesome!
