Forums - Sony - Sony talked about 3d camera in ps2 days

One of the guys from the e3 presentation talking about the eye toy and stuff.

http://lang.stanford.edu/courses/ee380/2003-2004/040121-ee380-100.wmv

The 3d camera is mentioned at 55 and at 58 they show off a video using a camera that tracks 3d.

Just thought it was pretty interesting..

He also has a primitive version of the "wand" which is actually just a green and a red ball on a stick in this video. It's pretty interesting all of it but the 3d stuff starts at 55 minutes in.

Also Credits to videogirl for finding this and putting it in the comments section of a news post.

Thought it deserved it's own thread.

As long as it wasn't released first, none of this matters.

There's a lot of stuff rolling around R&D in big companies, most of them go unutilized until someone else does something with it which they can copy. In fact, I'd argue most companies have had all the technology other companies do. It's not a matter of contemplating it, it's a matter of doing something with it, and doing it big.

Talking and experimenting is not a final product.

3D cameras, face recognition?  in the real world maybe security and Sci-fi movies.  In the Gaming world,  Nintendo set that standard and now everyone screaming "we were trying it 1st.  "BULLSHIT!!" Remember game boy camera?  Heres another cool story.  Remember "RARE" and Nintendo 64, Goldeneye camera add on "never released".  R&D? No.  Completed but was canned cause of Nintedo concern (at the time) was pictures of PENUS man or "Loud mouthed Sen Liberman - being shot in my multi player mode"  screens on the Internet.  Read Rare's story about it.

You know?  When I think about it, (back when Nintendo 64 was around)  Cell  phones? No,  Beepers where more popular then.  Phones with camers?  Nope, cant recall.  Lap tops with camera built in?  Nope, cant recall. Gameboy camera?  Yes.  Nintendo didnt create the camera.  They just made it "FUN".

meh I had hoped for a few constructive comments before people started whining.

Anyways incase you missed it the point of the thread is the technology discussion seen in the video itself. Like I said it's very interesting.

Also the part about the wands .. but in particular the z camera. Sounds a lot like nathal. I wonder why they went away from that concept, though it seems they did do with the ps eyes mcirophone what he was talking about them looking into. (voice recognition, noise cancelling)

Some of the most interesting of the video is definetly how they've been trying out different ideas.
Frankly from watching all of the conference, it seems that sony kind of put these guys away a little bit because sony opted to go with other motion sensing capabilities when the ps3 launched.

I'm glad they brought them out though because personally i'm looking forward to seeing what sony can do with the wands.

It seems like Sony dropped the ball on motion control like GM dropped the ball on the electric car (in favour of the Hummer...), now both are trying to play catch-up.
