Forums - Gaming - Could the announcement of a new XBOX in 2010 mean the start of the next gen

I don't but a new xbox announced for next year could mean the beginning of the next generation. I mean most of these consoles of this gen have been out for almost three years now and by 2010, it will make it four. The average gen last for four five years. Also remember the XBOX 360 was released in 2005 and showed a sign of the end of the 6th generation. Could this announcement of a new xbox console mean the beginning of the end of the 7th generation?

What do you thinK?

No not for Sony. What made the PS3 weak early in it's life (expensive hardware, hard to program for) are now its greatest strengths. Like many I don't think new X-Box will actually be a new X-box but a 360 with a casual appeal.

No, it's a new Xbox 360 model with project natal with it. It's nothing really new.

I am starting to think we are skipping a generation, and all 3 platforms will be on the market for 10 years

oh ok. they weren't clear because they said a new xbox. making it seem like a brand new console.

I'm pretty sure that it's going to be like the DSi or PSP Go, which means, an significant upgrade but not a whole new console with different specs.

I hope not.

I think it would be nice if there was a good 6-7 years between the last console of this gen to the first of the next gen.... rather than just 5 between the two early starters.

I have no interest in any xbox console, but I know if a brand new one launches then it won't be too long till the rest follow, and I will be annoyed at MS for it.

No. The next gen doesn't start until Sony says it does.

Impossible. Nintendo at least is going to be forced out at a certain point, and i think Sony and MS need to reinvent if they want to truly compete

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

If SCE and MS reinvent, they'll both take the Nintendo approach to hardware and go with modest spec upgrades while focusing on ease of development, profitability/lower production costs and accessibility, particularly when it comes to user interface.

I would imagine MS would be the first to jump the gun on this. SCE on the other hand, would probably focus instead on pushing a PSThree model into profitability with deeper market penetration and lower costs all around.

Nintendo on the other hand, may well do an HD console to reach parity with it's competitors from a technical standpoint. Of course the smarter approach is to simply wait until it's clear that hardware limitations are what's holding back sales and stick with the platform for an extended period of time, much like the original NES.
