i whole heartedly agree

i LOVED mg on nes as a kid, and am dying to love it now . . .

but the story turns me off big time. its why i dont watch anime or stuff like that. just way overdone 'look how deep this is! and metaphoric!' story.

give me splinter cell any day.

having said that tho, i still try to play every mgs game, and i hope they just chill out and deliver a great game and not worry about if the story is too hard to follow if you try to get high and play or something :P

the writing isn't bad, it's just very heavy handed.  It isn't bad.  If you want bad writing, look at a little game called Star Ocean The Last Hope(English version).  Some of the dialogue is that game is nothing short of horrendous.  The game is even more heavy handed than MGS and repeats even the simpliest plot points into the ground.

Anyway, yeah, regardless of source, the core point of the article is right: Metal Gear Solid needs better writing. Or, at least, Kojima needs a good editor.

The problem many have started when  FFVII came out.  FFVII convinced developers that it was alright to have overly lengthy cutscenes.  That is what I read on a site called TVTropes.org

I always saw that as a cheap device to focus the attention of the player on the entities that are relevant for the game, a bit like the bolded or coloured text spans in so many adventures and RPGs. But of course, I don't speak Japanese.
