Ghostbusters on PS3 lags behind 360 version; developer explains

Richard Leadbetter – Director of HD consultancy Digital Foundry and author of Eurogamer's multiplatform comparison Face-off features – tweeted that playing Ghostbusters on the PS3 was like "time-warping back to the dawn of PS3 development." Ouch! That's especially painful to read considering the high hopes Terminal Reality – developers of the just-released Ghostbusters game – have for their multiplatform Infernal Engine.

Internet reports of a less-than-stellar PS3 version of the title originated at Lens of Truth on Monday, were later corroborated by Gamezine.co.uktold VG247 last year, "We're one of the few developers who love the PS3 and have a great time with it. We have great technology for the PS3 and we want to show it off."

Instead of leaving it up to internet Matlocks, we asked Terminal Reality to comment on the controversy. A spokesperson for the developer told us, "For the record, the PS3 version [of Ghostbusters] is softer due to the 'quincunx' antialiasing filter and the fact we render at about 75% the resolution of the 360 version. So you cannot directly compare a screen shot of one to the other unless you scale them properly. The PS3 does have less available RAM than the 360but we managed to squeeze 3 out of 4 textures as full size on the PS3."

So: is the PS3 "maxed out"? Or is Terminal Reality's engine – despite comments to the contrary – just not up to snuff on the PS3? With most recent multiplatform titles performing comparably, if not identically, on both the Xbox 360 and PS3 consoles, we'd be inclined to agree with Mr. Leadbetter: it's like "time-warping back to the dawn of PS3 development" when PS3 games were routinely outperformed by their Xbox 360 counterparts. Let's hope the irony of the situation is lost on Ghostbusters' exclusive European publisher ... Sony. As well as the franchise's owner ... Sony Pictures.
and, following tomorrow's publication of Leadbetter's most recent Face-off feature, will be further corroborated by Eurogamer. Confusing the issue even further is the following quote from Terminal Reality's Mark Randel, who

Does Ghostbusters: The Video Game Look Better On Xbox 360?

Online head-to-head comparisons of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of Atari's Ghostbusters: The Video Game indicate that one of those high-def consoles is offering a less "feel good" experience.

Game blog Lens of Truth put both the PS3 and 360 versions of the game under the their... lens of truth, achieving results that show the PlayStation 3 version appears to be filtered through a fine film of ectoplasmic residue. What does that mean in technical terms? Decreased texture quality, lower resolution and missing shadowing and lighting effects, according to the site's tests.

The blog's side-by-side comparison isn't favorable to the PS3 version, which they point out carries with it a substantial hard drive installation to little perceived benefit.

A similar test was run by Digital Foundry's Richard Leadbetter, who handles head-to-head console comparisons for Eurogamer. Two of his findings highlighting the quality differences can be seen here and here. He also tweeted earlier this week "At the gutter end of Face-Off 20 with Ghostbusters: The Video Game. It's like time-warping back to the dawn of PS3 development." We'll assume that's a reference to previous quality differences between Xbox 360 games and their PlayStation 3 counterparts.

We've contacted Atari, its third-party PR firm and Ghostbusters developers Terminal Reality but have yet (checks again) to receive a response to our inquiries about the differences.

What can we learn here? Well, if you're equipped with both consoles, your decision about which version to purchase might have been made a little easier. If you're in PAL land and were on the fence about importing a region free copy of the game, perhaps this detailed look at the game's visuals will get your ass off the fence.

We'd definitely recommend exercising caution in the comments. Because it could get bad in there if people don't behave themselves. How bad? Try to imagine all life as you know it stopping instantaneously and every molecule in your body exploding at the speed of light.

Lol, they are like almost proud they made it as good as they did.

Clearly PS3 is hard to develop for, and can have some restrictions, but when the majority of companies can make games perfectly identical, I don't know if it is acceptable. At least not from a higher profile release like this was.

"So you cannot directly compare a screen shot of one to the other unless you scale them properly."

Given that I'd like to know: 1) does the PS3 game look as fuzzy as the screenshots, and 2) if not, which sites are claiming that it does?

Did this dev really brag about ps3 as their lead platform b4? I thought that when you brag about somthing it means your confident about what your doing.....guess not every one does.

They look exactly the same to me. Only difference to me seems like some turned up the brightness on their TV on the PS3 version and lowered the brightness in the 360 version.

That's why I love owning different consoles. Always the option to choose the better looking one. :)

Not sure if you were being sarcastic.  To me, one of them is clearly more blurry and less detailed.  It's almost like day and evening (note I didn't say night).
