Forums - General - USA vs the World

As mentioned earlier, actual military capability varies from statistics found online and in the press. A lot of these other countries mentioned earlier in this thread inflate their numbers just to 'say' they have a large 'insert military branch' or fleet of 'insert weapon/plane/ship'.

When we invaded Iraq, Saddam Hussein supposedly had '2 million soldiers' at his disposal and threatened us with his so-called 'Iraq Elite Revolutionary Guard', what a laugh. My father tells me when he was entering Baghdad, he could hear their radio broadcasting how they were 'annihilating the American scum' yet when the Allied forces actually arrived, they were met with little to no resistance. Initially, their small military was wiped out very quickly while we were left with the fucking roaches/guerrillas pinching us in the ass for the past few years.

Iran is another country who say they have 'millions of troops at their disposal'...ah, sounds just like pre-war Iraq. I'm not dissing on military's of China/Russia, I'm just saying that they heavily inflate their numbers, or will add disfunctional and outdated equipment to their rooster.

I primarily work with maintaining advanced computer systems on ships and weapons systems, but during briefings we are told all of this information about other countries capabilities up-front, so we know who we may be theoretically dealing with.

All this talk about aircraft carriers, but are they really proven to be hard to sink?

It is incredibly difficult to sink an aircraft carrier.  Their hulls are made of some pretty freaky stuff.  Read up on World War 2 battles (the last naval battles where carriers were involve en masse).  The Japanese and the USA went at it HARD.  The amount of planes, ships and submarines that had to go down just to sink a few carriers was insane.

And these days (whilst there are admittedly better offensive weapons) the defensive weapons on carriers are INSANE, and the defensive weapons AROUND carriers in the US fleets are unbelievable.  Aegis weapons systems deployed on cruisers and destroyers in the American and Japanese Navies can cause untold hell for incoming enemy missles, planes, ships and submarines, all of which prevent the enemy from getting to the carrier.

Don't get me wrong, if for some unfortunate reason a carrier was caught on it's own without an escort it would be quite vulnerable (but still far from a sitting duck), but that is highly unlilkely to ever happen.

starcraft - Playing Games = FUN, Talking about Games = SERIOUS

Play Fallout 3. America won the war against China, but in turn the whole world was nearly destroyed. Thats pretty much what would happen if a war broke out now.

Currently the US is deciding whether to go forward with a new class of super carrier named after gerald ford (why?) or to build smaller amphibious carriers.

Meanwhile India, UK and, Russia, Italy and Spain are working on new carriers for their fleets

Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

Avinash, remember:

The US has 1 less carrier than every other nation combined (11 US carriers vs. 12 carriers by all other nations). The most carriers any other country owns is 2.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

Oh I know, i'm not saying any nation is going to challenge the US any time soon in terms of naval prowess, I was just pointing out what the US is considereing for the future, now that some of their carriers are being aged out
