General - USA vs the World - View Post

All this talk about aircraft carriers, but are they really proven to be hard to sink?

It is incredibly difficult to sink an aircraft carrier.  Their hulls are made of some pretty freaky stuff.  Read up on World War 2 battles (the last naval battles where carriers were involve en masse).  The Japanese and the USA went at it HARD.  The amount of planes, ships and submarines that had to go down just to sink a few carriers was insane.

And these days (whilst there are admittedly better offensive weapons) the defensive weapons on carriers are INSANE, and the defensive weapons AROUND carriers in the US fleets are unbelievable.  Aegis weapons systems deployed on cruisers and destroyers in the American and Japanese Navies can cause untold hell for incoming enemy missles, planes, ships and submarines, all of which prevent the enemy from getting to the carrier.

Don't get me wrong, if for some unfortunate reason a carrier was caught on it's own without an escort it would be quite vulnerable (but still far from a sitting duck), but that is highly unlilkely to ever happen.
