Forums - PC - America's Army 3

Available to preload on Steam now (Or download from fileplanet, playable now) and will be unlocked for play in 18 hours.  According to one of the beta testers I've been talking to, it's been massively improved.  I've been told weapons training is much harder, you cannot use weapons online you are not trained for, you must earn your chance to even have a shot at SF training through recommendation.

70% preloaded for me so far, I can't wait.  As with all previous AA's, the game is free =D

That's the game made by the US army to get people to join the army right?

I'd say it's more of a "Good FPS".

I was just curious because it seems odd to make the training mode harder.  Seems like it would make people less likely to join up.

The game doesn't literally ask you to join the army, the most there was the last time I played was the "American Soldiers Creed" (A list/passage of the morals each solider has) showed in loading screens. I;d just say it's a 'simulator' of sorts.

The harder training mode is to represent the reality, now people will need expert results in all marksman tests in order to qualify to take the sniper tests. Once passing those will they be able to snipe online.  I like the sound of it even though I will probably not see the sniper rifle in a long while xD

What a mess of a double post this was =o

Can't say I cared for the game when I tried playing it in the past (version 2.8 or whatever), but I'll give AA3 a shot for the heck of it. Even though the gameplay trailer looks mediocre when compared to other games, but it is free... But that shouldn't be a free pass.

The whole thing being a recruitment tool kind of ruins the game aspect of it in my opinion. This leads to something I dislike, you always see yourself as an army soldier and the other team ALWAYS looks like generic ski mask bad guys. This also bugs me because your team ALWAYS uses weapons like M16's, but the enemy team uses AK's and since you can pick those up, it just feels really weird when you consider that everybody see's themselves as using American firearms. Due to this, I found the laser tag gameplay mode to be pretty interesting since the enemies look like your team mates instead of generic enemies, but they wear dark green uniforms instead of cammo.

I do find the training missions interesting in how they try to be serious (though in a laughable way) while teaching you how to play the game and how you're required to complete training missions to use things in online gameplay. The SF sneaking mission was a pain in the ass though because the enemy soldiers could somehow see a small bit of your body from a long distance through tree's and bushes causing you to have to restart the mission/checkpoint.

The gameplay is decent and I really hate movement speeds (especially if you take some damage.... dear god). Again, since it's more of a recruitment tool, the game experience feels lacking.

There is more to it than a recruitment tool ...

From what I remember, the US Army needed to upgrade all of its simulators that it was using from the Quake II engine and they decided to use the Unreal 2 engine; and they decided to use a version of the simulations they were developing as a recruitment tool. From my (very limited) understanding, it has been a very successful tool because it gives people a more realistic view of what the Army is all about, which (often) weeds out the crazy people while encouraging the kind of people the Army is looking for.

What I have always wondered (since the release of the original version) is whether the Army gathers (and studies) statistics based on the matches. While the limitations in the system allow impossible strategies to be successful, for the most part it is based in reality and the success or failure of countless players probably works far better than any computer simulation at creating successful strategies.

I also disliked that you always saw yourself as the American Army and the OPFOR as the stereotypical terrorist.  I only cared about that because it made it harder for you to conceal yourself among you surroundings to enemy players, since you didn't know which skin you actually had.

I much prefer the movement system it has to the "deathmatch" styled FPS.  The guy I was talking to said "I don't know too many folks who jump around with a M249, they're quite heavy. You see this all the time in CoD, you won't see it here."  I thoroughly agree with him, although I do love some TF2, I much prefer AA's format.

Edit: 9 hours until it's unlocked.
