Forums - Microsoft - Bungie Responds to 640p Claims

Halo3 is hardly the first 360/PS3 game that upscales from some exotic resolution slightly lower than 1280x720. Good lighting > Lots of pixels.

Halo 3 is in HD. As long as it is upscaled and my TV responds with 720p, then it's in HD. The 640p debate is irrelevant. The game is incredible.

And for all those who thinks it looks like crap, sometimes, if you look hard enough, clouds look like human faces. True Story.

So what they are saying is that 1080i or p or whatever isn't significant? Thats funny I thought it was the most important thing in the world a week ago. That's when they were bragging up how it would run at that resolution. That sounds like something Sony would do.

Halo 3 isn't rendering in HD, 576 p/i PS2 games can be upscaled to 720p and 1080p by the PS3, but nobody would claim PAL PS2 games are really HD. Upscaling often enhances overall picture quality on HDTV sets, but you do not get any additional detail added. That's why Blu-Ray movies look so much better on 720p and 1080p TV sets as compared to the best upscaling DVD players on the market.

The 640p debate isn't irrelavant at all, people are discussing technicals and are thinking about the genuine reasons for this limitation. If the game is good or not in your opinion is actually far more irrelevant in such discussions, as people are referring to technicals. Yes, pacman is fun, why shouldn't it be good to discuss the technicals if a system wouldn't be able to draw graphics in more than 4 colors? Irrelevant because Pacman is a good game?

PS3 vs 360 sales

I'd rather have a game that looks good than a game that can brag it's 1080dpi and still look like little more than a dreamcast game on an HD TV.

Agreed, but technicals matters with regard to future potential. Surely there are c64, NES or even ZX spectrum games out there which are a lot more fun to play than some modern PC games, but that doesn't mean discussing technicals is meaningless. There are also great PC games, the hardware is much better specced to allow artists and designers to better express their gaming ideas while having to worry less about technical limitations.

To be quite honest, I can think of a lot of cases where games were more interesting and fun when they faced technical limitations than they became when those limitations were removed. If you can't impress your audience with graphics, you have little choice but to impress them with the gameplay. Otherwise, you have no product.

But that's a discussion for another thread.  :)

I think most people were getting this wrong anyway... some thought 640p was 640x480 (that's 480p), but still 1152x640 is very good

I agree, I think alot of people associated '640p' with horizontal resolution.

Why is this game advertised as 1080P?
