Forums - Microsoft - GameDaily estimates Halo 3 Sells 2.48 Million Units on Day One

Not that we need another Halo thread, but this is the first estimated break-down of the unit numbers I've seen, so I thought I'd post.

... which would mean that Halo 3 edged out Halo 2 not just in first day sales, but first day unit sales, as well. Pretty amazing.

And now we can move onto making new threads... preferably about Mass Effect.

This is extrapolated from the $170 million dollar figure, which is US only. So this would be 2.48 million units in the US. I haven't read a single estimate about sales in other territories, yet.

Nuh, this is US alone.

They took the 170 million estimate for NA sales, then asked a major retailer the breakdown, and they said for every 4 Halo 3 regular editions they sold, they sold two Limited Edition Halo 3's, and one Legendary edition.

Their math:

The breakdown suggests that 14 percent of copies were legendary, 29 percent were limited edition, and 57 percent were standard edition. Applying those percentages to the $170 million total, and then dividing each individual dollar total by the MSRPs of $59.99, $69.99 and $129.99 yields the following unit totals:

  • Standard edition: 1,600,000
  • Limited edition (aka scratched discs edition): 694,000
  • Legendary edition: 187,000

Adding the numbers up gives us a grand total of 2.48 million units sold on the first day, significantly higher than the 1.7 million copies that Microsoft said were pre-ordered, meaning that another 700,000 or so people bought the game without any pre-order. If correct, then Halo 3 did indeed edge out Halo 2 in unit sales as well - Halo 2 sold 2.4 million copies in the first 24 hours.

US alone? O_O

Went with a friend today and he bought an Xbox 360 and Halo 3. And while we were in there we saw another guy come in and start buying a Elite and Halo 3 (just Halo 3 though).

From what I've heard there is a big "ripple" effect where people are buying 360's just because everyone else seems to have one lol. I know at my college and a few others, Halo 3 is king right now (way more then Madden).

Oh worth mentioning the EB guy said the the Core 360 has totally been phased out locally, they're selling tons of Elites, but that the Wii is still constantly selling out really, really fast.

Also mentioned PS3 & Warhawk are doing okay. That makes me happy because I think Warhawk is the coolest looking game right now for the PS3, awesome to hear its doing good.

With regard to Call of Duty 4 having an ultra short single player campaign, I guess it may well have been due to the size limitations of DVD on the XBox 360, one of various limitations multi-platform game designers will have to take into consideration-Mike B

Game trailers-Halo 3 only dissapointed the people who wanted to be dissapointed.

Bet with Harvey Birdman that Lost Odyssey will sell more then Blue dragon did.

Well japan wouldn't add that much and I'm not sure about europe.

It did over 50k on the first day in australia breaking the record for first day sales there. It did 45k apparently in Japan. That's about 100k right there. If the 2.4-5 in US is correct and I've heard europe had around 500k preorders.

We're easily looking at 3 million on day one between europe, america and japan. Even if europe didn't have 500k preorders and only sold 500k in preorders + regular buys, Halo 3 easily did 3 mill worldwide on day 1.
