FF XIV, the online game, got its start much earlier, as another game.  At some point, it was decided it would be FF XIV.

The online aspect is the only thing allowing it to be released when it is.

The boost it brings to any console getting it in 2010 will be larger than the boost the console would receive from a single player game 2 years later.  Put another way, Sony or Microsoft would rather have the former than the latter, because the former will benefit them more.

FFXIV was first announced, as a project under the code named "rapture", 4 years ago. the same team who made FFXI is the same team doing FFXIV. so it was pretty much going to be another FF just didnt know which number.

 

anywho, i have to disagree. the boost of sony getting FFXIV is not going to be all that big. maybe a few thousand consoles extra will be pushed WW but other than that its just another game sony can say "hey, the 360 doesnt have this. buy me" so imo a single player FF coming in 2012 would be bigger than a 2010 mmo

this WILL not be on xbox (FFXIV online that is). Sony stated they paid rights to own EXCLUSIVITY to the PS3. Xbox has stolen enough already (cough metal gear solid, grand theft auto, final fantasy cough)

well,, when games like mass effect are on xbox 360 they are also on microsoft pcs(there fore they belong in the microsoft section) xD

Microsoft makes operating systems....not PC's. I could play Mass Effect and Gears on a Mac if I wanted to. Also I'm pretty sure you get my point and are just joking based on your post. I could play Gears of War on a Sony Vaio. Does that mean news about Gears of War has to be in the gaming section?

Square Enix has publicly stated they are considering 360, and announced it in their press at E3. Here is the Shacknews summary :

see this is completely fair. I would love to see it appear on 360 especially if this one allows cross platform gameplay as well. But untill we get some sort of confirmation this is indeed a PS3 exclusive.

Enough derailment though. This is pathetic. A thread that is supposed to be about the fact that FFXIV is online has to turn into a war about what console it is on. I personally agree with the original post and I think it is extremely crucial to note that Square made this title a numbered entry. This means their not fucking around!!!

perpride I cannot believe someone was stupid enough to make a bet like that with you, you should have made it a perma-ban though. :(

Anyway I do not see FFXIV releasing before FFXIII Versus or it will simply be named FFXV. It is pretty simple really.

So pretty much when I see news on Alan Wake and Mass Effect go into the "Gaming" section, this game belongs right here in the Sony forums.

This is most definitely the right section for this, or at least equally right compared to some 360 "exclusives". The game is still a console exclusive, albeit not very secure, and this thread is about the console version anyway. Truth be told, though, if this thread wasn't only about consoles, I'd rather have this in Gaming than Sony.

Anyway, the idea is probably right; this gen is pretty much done games-wise in 2012 (well, maybe with the exception of casual games). And of course complete LACK of games would be important. But even now all consoles have great games; no console lacks these huge games.
