Okay, I've had a think about this and maybe, just maybe, the PS3Slim will be the premium model? Think of it this way...they bring out the slim, which has the same features as a normal 160Gb PS3 just now, but all the chips are smaller, and the casing is cheaper to make, hence the actual unit is cheaper than the rumoured $440 cost to make....look at what they have done with the PSPGo...making it $250.
Right, so there are 2 models in NA (80Gb and 160Gb) and 1 model in EU (80Gb)...they now make the 80Gb model the cheap model (ie. like the PSP-3000) and replace the current 160Gb in NA with the PS3Slim model...the luxury model (ie. like the PSPGo).
By doing this, they are effectively going to get rid of the current PS3 model over the next 6 months, which people will generally buy the new PS3 Slim (non budget) model to get the new looks and bigger drive.
What Sony do is reduce the cost of the 80Gb model from $399 to $299 in NA and from £299 to £229 in Europe. The new PS3Slim comes into the market place at the $399 price point in NA and £299 in Europe.
By doing this, Sony start making money on the new PS3Slim...okay they will lose money with the 80Gb PS3's by reducing it to $299, but they will eventually be left with the 160Gb model on the market 6 months from release as all the 80Gb will be sold out. The new PS3Slim will probably cost significantly cheaper to make than the currently rumoured $440 for the 80Gb PS3....it may be closer to $350 (a guess), so Sony make profits on all PS3Slims sold from release.
By doing this, Sony are giving people the cheaper PS3 as well as releasing a smaller PS3 for new customers as well, which will appeal to the Japanese audience....also expect a PSPSlim FFXIII pack being released later in the year...to make huge sales.
