Dusty PS3 Inspector Threw Dirt On PS3 So He Wouldn't Have To Repair It

Well well well. New information from an inside source says that the tech threw dirt on the infamous "dusty PS3" to deny the warranty claim because he didn't feel like repairing it. Shocking! His confession, inside.

1. We received the console with a fair amount of dust on it, but certainly nothing in excess of what I would expect from a PS3. As has been documented, the PS3 is basically a dust magnet.

2. The technician who got it, for some reason or another, didn't want to repair the console and inhale some of the dust, so he decided to deny the repair as "neglect."

3. Since the technician knew he couldn't get the repair denied based on the condition the console was actually received in, he decided to throw a bit of dirt on the console. Getting the dirt into the repair center wasn't that hard since the original tech was a smoker himself. All he had to do was go outside on his break. We have Ziploc bags.

4. As part of the procedure for denying a claim, pictures were taken and attached to the case notes. These same pictures were taken after the dirt was thrown on it and posted on Consumerist.

5. The warranty contains no clause for the technician to deny the warranty based on the dust alone, as the owner knows. That's why the technician had to throw dirt on it and claim it was neglected.

6. Sony should repair or replace the console. Period.

I worked in the same facility. I'm pretty sure at least one supervisor knew about it. They just didn't want to publish anything because it was already a PR nightmare, and admitting they did that would just hurt them even more.

Last we checked, Reid had tried getting a refund through VISA but they ended up denying it. We asked him what he thought of this story and he said, "All of this seems possible to me and really just sad, I'd be really sad to hear that all this trouble was caused by one lazy tech."

Sony hasn't responded to our request for comment.

Yup, people suck.

Oh wow. If it was my PS3 I'd extremely pissed.

You know I thought I had gotten all the amusement I could ever hope for out of this story the first time around. This is certain to pop open the old fanboy flamefest in new and exciting ways though. The original tech was a dick though if this story is to be believed.

Throwing dirt on my PS3 (which isn't reading discs at the moment) would be a personal insult. I would want to hunt that tech down and throw dirt in his mouth for such things!

As the last point says, this was all clearly Sony's fault for not replacing or repairing the console themselves. =P

I feel that the customer got what he deserved, it may have not been right what the tech did, but I'm sure there are 2 sides to this story, so let not paint the customer as being a saint.

The PS3 is a dust magnet but yeah the customer probably should have taken better care of the console. The tech is supposed to do his job bottom line and if they decide to just throw dust on it then that is just plain lazy. Sony should have repaired it though which is a good point.

why do you feel that he got what he deserved?  You just assumed that he might have done something?  Yes there is always more than what is reported but to say you feel he deserved it basked on being sure there are two sides to the story.   The other side could just be on the technitian maybe he was having a terrible day and then did something terrible, we don't know.  To feel someone desevres something bad happening to them when you know they did something is one thing, but to feel that way when you don't even know.  That's really cold.

I've worked in a call center, and retail, I've seen and spoken with people that have tried to either get a refund, or new products sent out to them, because they feel that it broke on it's own or was faulty from the start, and with further inspection we find out that the customers stupidty in most case's caused the problem, now I'm not saying that all people are like that, but that one must not just take one side just because he/she is a victim, just remember that victims can also be the culprit, and all it takes is verbal abuse, or in this techs case, finding  a small note with some harsh words or something like that make people snap, I know cuz I've released calls my self, abusive people should be dealt with in this manner, plain and simply regardless of the occupation.
