I'd rather buy the new full game rather than DLC for space issues as well as to own the physical copy, but at the same time I know it's going to split the online community for both games which sucks.

Well I now really don't understand what is the goal of releasing a whole new game if they still plan to support the old one. Both games will be highly similar and Newell also said he wants the L4D community to grow but making L4D2 actually will seperate it. It's obvious this decision from Valve is against what their used to.

This is always just a stupid argument.

Most people have a friends list they like to play with or a set map they want to play, adding another game isn't going to change that.  If you want to play Dead Air, you will be looking for Dead Air, not The Parish.  It's getting mad if they just released a new map because now not everyone will be playing the old maps.

And even if it does split the userbase, who cares?  That happens with any sequel so your best bet is to just get over it.  There will still be people playing both.

Seems a bit soon, but I'll gladly pay $50 come November for a sequel to the best shooter hands down in years. The people who bought this expecting TF2-like support will obviously feel miffed by this announcement, but it sounds like they're going to get the dynamic they envisioned for the first right this time, and do what they can to fight camping and hiding. Seems like the original won't be getting much more support other than community stuff though, which is disappointing to say the least. After 4v4 matchmaking, I really wonder what they intend to add.
