Forums - General - Does anyone play Magic the Gathering?

I made on official MTG on XBLA thread. It comes out next week and looks awesome. 800 MS points and NO buying virtual boosters. You unlock cards through gameplay.

Yet, today, America's leaders are reenacting every folly that brought these great powers [Russia, Germany, and Japan] to ruin -- from arrogance and hubris, to assertions of global hegemony, to imperial overstretch, to trumpeting new 'crusades,' to handing out war guarantees to regions and countries where Americans have never fought before. We are piling up the kind of commitments that produced the greatest disasters of the twentieth century.

It might be dead at your old store but it's still very much alive.

I started about 15-ish years ago and played until about 2000, took a good break until 2008 or so and man the game had changed.

Anyways, yeah, it's still alive and they release a new set every month or so now. Unless you have a crapload of money to throw away it's pretty pointless to try and be competitive in standard and even more pointless to even attempt extended.

That said, limited is still a lot of fun and for about $25 you can have a really fun day at prereleases. I would highly suggest checking them out.

What are these programs of which you speak?

Free MTG online?

Scrollrack is a program where you load image of the cards and play against someone online. It's not a MtG client "per se", in the sense that it doesn't know the rules, it's up to both players to enforce them, they have to destroy the cards, deal damage, draw cards, all by themselves.

On the flipside, you can use every card you always dreamed to use

I tried a couple of matches, it works in a clever way

You should really try Magic Workstation.  It's completely free and you can customize a lot of things.  It doesn't really know the rules either but you can play against other people.  The bad thing about it is that the *really* competitive people use it so you'll find some jerks.

Being truly competitive becomes a way of life. I just couldn't keep up with it timewise and financially. You can avoid a lot of the cost if you are a good trader (and if you trade online...), but its quite a commitment.

Oh yeah.   People will buy entire cases just for one card and trash the rest.

Crazy stuff.  Geniuses those guys who created it.

I've never seen people into it that bad, but I've never gone to a tournament or really been interested enough to do so.  It's a fun hobby to play with friends.

Anyone interested in playing online via Scrollrack (free) can PM me if they like.

I know some people who are that bad and some people at work would be like that too.  They didn't always buy boxes but they would go out and spend $50 on a playset of some really good card just to have.  They would build their collection so they could build most competitive decks and it cost them a fortune.  I was competitive there for a while last year and did really well at tournaments for a while, but I also played Merfolk which was about the cheapest deck to make.

Now we just mainly play limited (I love playing sealed) and just for fun multiplayer games at work on occassion.

30 bucks?

Fock that :P

We'll miss you George.

My friends call me Hadoken because I'm down-right fierce

I played way back in the day. I remember my awesome Rebel Deck like it was yesterday. Only really played the Urza and Mercadian sets, and played a bit with the sets before those. I tried Apprentice once but couldn't get into it. I had a lot of fun with it though.

Hi, this is Vince with Shamwow.

I stopped after urza's block got removed from type II. I decided it's cheaper to buy warhammer minis than staying in the game in MTG:)
