It might be dead at your old store but it's still very much alive.
I started about 15-ish years ago and played until about 2000, took a good break until 2008 or so and man the game had changed.
Anyways, yeah, it's still alive and they release a new set every month or so now. Unless you have a crapload of money to throw away it's pretty pointless to try and be competitive in standard and even more pointless to even attempt extended.
That said, limited is still a lot of fun and for about $25 you can have a really fun day at prereleases. I would highly suggest checking them out.
