Forums - Gaming - Who thinks we will ever see MS & Sony's controls described as "waggle?"

The use of this word by gaming journalists for the past three years has been a big pet peev of mine. It's ugly, and derogatory. Clearly designed to put down the very idea of motion controls.

The word might have had a place if it was used properly. Some game designers use a flailing action with the wiimote for quick time events. The word 'waggle' could have been used to describe button-mashing with your wrist.

Instead, it is applied to any and every use of motion control. I just saw a journalist use it to desribe Metroid Prime's controls. Metroid Prime is almost entirely controlled with the pointer, making almost no use of the accelerometer. The precision of pointer control in Metroid is as far from 'waggling' as motion control can possibly be.

So now that Sony and MS appear to be seriously persuing motion controls, is the label of 'waggle' going to be applied to their inputs, or are journalists going to suddenly find respect for creative new input methods?

*tris to predit the future in journalists minds*

Hmmmmmm.... I don't know :/

To use logic to predict the illogical actions of journalists is illogical in itself. * Spock out *

In the wilderness we go alone with our new knowledge and strength.

Nintendo shall always be the king of waggle.

I prefer to think of Natal as "wiggle."

That term's taken. I use it to describe dual analog sticks, because you wiggle your thumbs to control the game.

Hmmm, from the description of how Burnout uses Natal for pedals, and from the way that girl in the onstage demo was kicking her legs around, maybe we could term it 'waddle' control?

sony project can be done easly

ms project is very difficult to achieve

but the ms one is "sexy"

Time to Work !

I think it has something to do with the original Wiimote not registering accelleration slower than 20cm/s^-2. That meant that people had to 'waggle' the mote like a dog to get it to respond. As the Sony mote, Motion+ and Natal are more sensitive, I think that complaint will die off or the meaning will become more friendly over time.

Perhaps Natal will be referred to as a spasm? Epileptic fit? convulsion? Interface.

Tease.

Never, because now HD fanboys can't discredit anymore Wii's strategy because if they do, they'll discredit their favorites consoles as well.
