Forums - Microsoft - Jagged's ideas for possible Natal usages. Gaming and Non-Gaming. Discuss.

Gaming

Discs of Tron game - For anyone that has seen the movie Tron will know about what I am talking about.  There are two players, each on a standing on a platform consisting of multiple rings placed together much like a cinnamon roll.  There is a disc that can be thrown and caught.  The idea is to throw the disc and hit the opponent players rings which makes that ring disappear.  The player must try not to fall through the gap between rings that was just created.  You can dive, duck, throw, catch, etc.  All of this is possible via the current functionality of the Natal device.  It can read a 15 X 20 space so that is plenty of room to play in.  Catch the thing by just clamping your fingers down on the disc.  Run and throw for increased power.  Make sure to jump across gaps to avoid falling while trying to catch the disc.  Finger movement will determine when the disc is released mid throw.  I think this sounds fantastic.  No controller necessary and is fact much better in this scenario.  Online play a big feature.

Dodgeball - Once again uses the 15 X 20 area that Natal can detect.  Pick up, throw, dodge, jump, etc.  If a ball is on the ground 5 feet in front and to the left.  Walk over and pick it up, virtually of course.  Online play a big feature here as well.

Non-Gaming

Daily Excercise Programming - Since the Natal can recreate a skeletal system of 48 points, excercise programs would be a synch.  But it could be taken a step further by integrating current Live functionality such as Primetime to enrich the experience for people wanting a workout.  People could join a party and excercise with their friends.  This way they can chat and catch up while they are working out.  There could also be scheduled work out times where a host would be creating a live workout session and the people joining in could follow along.  This could use the same infrastrucure as Primetime is currently using.  1 host and 50,000 people being able to join in and work out with a professional from the comfort of their home.  There could be a percentage on screen displaying how well you are matching what the host is doing so you can know how well you are following along.  There could be sessions for all kinds of different work outs, tai bo, aerobics, etc.  There could also be downloadable versions as well.

Education Programming - I must say Squilliam came up with most of this idea, but I thought it was brilliant.  Programs such as Sesame Street and Blues Clues have parts in the program where they will ask for participation from the viewers, such as "what is this number or letter".  Now with Natal, children can actually interact with the programming.  M$ could create custom shows for this very purpose.  If the program asks which puzzle piece is the correct one, the child can actually point.  This provides a lot more involvement and response to the child.  There is no controller, so all you have to do is tell your kid to point at it or say whatever they want to be said.  Since it can recognize faces, a child can even be called out by name or provide some indication that they know who is watching.  Such as "Hey Johnny, I see you are wearing red today", etc.  That would blow a kids mind.  Also, perhaps give a kid incentive for getting things right like scores or prizes.  These could also be offered using the Primetime infrastrure that is already in place via scheduled programs for the kids to dial into.  They could also be done using DLC.

Around the Network

I hope that Natal offers more than mini-games and exercise programs. How about a true FPS with head-tracking camera control. (I would still want the controller for shooting and character movement.) MS hired the Wii head-tracking guy, I think his name is Johnny Lee. Maybe he is helping them with this.

Thanks for the input, Jeff.

I hope you aren't referring to the Tron game as a mini game. I could flesh that bad boy out. Have powerups floating in the air that you must throw the disc through to get, different platform shapes and removable parts, maybe allow more than 2 people and more than 1 disc to be in play at once, online tournaments, you could have various mini games inside the full game, such as an accuracy mode where you have to throw discs at blocks located in front of you in various spots, catching mode where many discs are coming at you at once and you have to catch them all, in fact these would be like training for the real deal. Which would be going up against real people over Live. I don't see how anyone would think this is not damn awesome. Watch Tron to see what I am talking about.

That would require me to find and setup my betamax machine.

My point was, it is hard to get excited by motion tech if it is just going to be a series of mini-games and on-rail shooters with awkward control schemes.  I am skeptical, but I am also quite happy with my non-motion HD systems.
