Forums - Sony - Need a new HDD but I need some halp!

So my 80Gig HDD is almost completely full... Need a new one. My question is what's the highest I can go with an HDD for the PS3(How many Gigs... Can it be a Terrabyte)? Also, how do I transfer all my files, I have an external HDD I use with my laptop, but I have no idea how to do this.

Thnx in advance! :)

Most peole here use a 360GB.. or a 320.. I forgot.

all you have to do is change the settings on the external drive and then plug it in your USB port on ps3 go to the backup restore under settings on the system and it will back up your file.....I think the settings you have to change on the external drive is the file name i think it has to be an exFAT file

ive seen people put up to a 500gb HDD. as for backing up your stuff i believe there's an option to back up your stuff somewhere in you XMB where all you need to do is hook up your external HDD and select that back up option...

What file system does the PS3 support?

I have this strange feeling that the PS3 only supports 512GB, but I may be wrong. But seriously do you really need a Terrabyte on the PS3? If you are talking about storing media like music and such you'd be better off buying a network drive and storing music on that so you can get to it from your PC too.

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy

exFAT won't work outside of a patched XP, vista or Win7 PC.

NTFS won't cut the mustard either.

the external drive will need to be formatted in FAT32.

You'll need to prep/format it with a third party formatting/partitioning tool (or Linux), because Windows won't allow you to format a drive that size in anything but NTFS or exFAT

also your new PS3 drive will need to be a SATA laptop size HDD, if you didn't know that already

Yea I know about what size it needs to be... my only problem is how much space does the PS3 support and how to format my external HDD to backup my files.

Thats right it was FAT32 not exFAT my bad

To backup you current HD, format a external harddrive to FAT32, plug it in and away you go.

I have a 500gb HDD on my PS3, I know that it supports up to 1TB but I believe only certain models (not sure about the last).

But really 500gb should be more than enough, you can always link you PS3 to your PC via a media server afterall.
