I'm more than satisfied with PS3 and 360 hardware, at this point. No need to rush next gen if it won't be many times more capable. 2015 is fine with me.

I will say this: Launching comparable (even if it's not the best) hardware with positive brand recognition early will make it tough on the competition to catch up. Worked for the Nes, Genesis, Playstation, Playstation 2, and Xbox 360. Sure, a couple of these didn't win their generation, but they must be considered successful!

Microsoft have been hinting at this for a long time and it obviously makes a lot of sense. This console generation is not the last. This console generation is not just about games and already has opened up new markets.

I think the first time I heard anything official was when the Microsoft Entertainments divisions CFO stated it during an investors conference. Obviously we cannot believe anything bean counters say so this is the first real announcement.

Microsoft has long said their system would last as long as the PS3.

 

And MS didn't mock Sony's 10 year plan, people did. And they didn't mock it because 10 year plans are mockable, but rather because a console in Sony's position at the time had no place saying it would be around for 10 years.
