I think retro went throught a little bit of difficulty, or should I say 'restructuring' after the release of metriod prime 3. I think a few of the senior members of the development team left shortly after the release to found a new studio with EA. Can't remember where I read it but I remember reading about how the former retro studio members were excited about working on the HD consoles, and wanting to make 'high risk' games. I think the loss of those members slowed down any subsequent projects, hence why nothing has been shown so far.

Of course, this may not be true - I'm just putting 2 and 2 together.

I think Nintendo has only a couple types of genres that they do not make. RPGs is one of them.

I expect Retro to make an MMORPG. I am guessing around 32-players online type.

If Nintendo servers get better, that could become 64-players. I would like that, that would be pretty nice.

No worries, but they actually said they were taking a break from the Metroid series to move onto other things. So they confirmed there next game would not be metroid related, not just expressed interest in other things but confirmed it.

Of course things could have changed since then but that's what they said after Metroid Prime 3's release

@ ash, with tales of, crystal beaers, dragon quest, and everything else they dont really need RPGs, however a new IP RPG is coming from monolith soft called monado:the beginning of the world. should hit the west in 2010. oh and in regards to them not making RPGs they have golden sun, paper mario, fire emblem and most importantly pokemon

nintedo seems to want to make their franchises more epic and appealing to western hardcore gamers. hence metroid gaiden.i have a feeling they tried to do the same thing with zelda but as that fell through there eithe rmaking an epic star fox or a new western focused IP. could be a WRPG tho not sure if it would be an MMO tho
