Forums - Gaming - Dave Perry: Gamers ignore Wii's 'sloppy' controls

Here's the other perspective from my Schizophrenic mind:

The wii is entirely dependant on the room set up. Too many other light sources, and the controller easily gets confused, and loses itself. Which obviously = bad controls. That is a fairly big, and sad issue for the Wii, and can cause severe issues, at least with motions depending on the pointer aspect.

First off, who is Dave Perry and what is Shiny?

Secondly, even Joystiq, no fan of motion controls by any stretch, defends motion controls against Perry, "it seems unfair to lay the burden of imprecise controls at the console's feet when games like Resident Evil 4 and Metroid Prime 3 make such strides to validate a full range of motion controls. " That shows how far out there this Perry guy is.

Third, what game with horrible controls are Wii owners accepting for the sake of innovation (after launch at least)? MoH? Sold poorly. Far Cry? Sold poorly. Boogie? Sold poorly. Madden 08? Selling poorly. The Bigs? Sold poorly (despite being the first actual baseball game). Prince of Persia? Sold Poorly. Since I know someone is going to bring it up (I'm guess either a mod withstick and ball in his id or another mod with 5 consonants for an id) Mario Party 8 had decent controls. They weren't great but except for one or two games they weren't sloppy.

I'm guessing this guy is a dev and he is a perfect example of why Nintendo needs to save the industry again.

While I think Dave Perry is a grade-A douchebag, there's no denying that many of the games released on Wii so far have had somewhat imprecise/sloppy controls, sadly very much including the launch Zelda (which was hella-fun, but if the combat was any more difficult, I would've been fucked. maybe my motions are just strange, but the movement tracking didn't recognize many of the gestures I made correctly).

HOWEVER, the reason for that is that most have been quick and easy ports. As the WiiMote is new technology, it takes a bit more effort to make it work precisely and well in-game. I've found that some of the more recent games (MP3, for example) have started to reach the levels of control accuracy I want from Wii games.

Complicated motion-based (not pointer-based) controls are still up in the air. I still hope they pull through.

I know what you mean about TP.  Some moves like the shield bash rarelyworked for me.  Of course, it was really just a GC title with added motion controls, so you can't really judge things based on that.

Of course, despite it being just a GC title, the fact that there was a special version coming to the Wii made me camp for one at launch. :P

Indeed, what sloppy controls is he talking about?

The great games the Wii has so far generally have very well executed controls. A bunch of games have bad controls that feel tacked on, but IMO they get all the flak they deserve. Sure a bunch of people are acting like there are no problems on the Wii, but perhaps the same can be said of all consoles? [/Dracula]

David Perry is a great developer who founded Shiny Entertainment. Games he worked on include Earthworm Jim, Messiah, Sacrifice, and a bunch of less awesome stuff.

He's very competent, but I definitely disagree with him here.

Yeah, and the PS3 surprises me with its sloppy controls and shitty framerate if I base everything on Lair. It's funny how every time you get your hands any type of article with any type of negative to anything Nintendo you immediately post it like that is the final nail in the coffin that the Wii is crap.

I don't think that's as big of a deal as people make it out to be. I can easily play the Wii with several lights on and my blinds partially open and not have any problem. There is interference if I point my remote directly at a light or leave my window facing the sun completely open, but how often is my remote pointing directly at a light when I need the pointer and how often are my windows all the way open? Never and never.

I've played a bunch of games using the wii-mote and i must say it is very sloppy and very hard to control. I even had to have another person navigate the wii menu to get me into the game because it was impossible to control the icon on screen to get to the game. I'm sure i'm not the only person to have these problems.

You can't even get a game up!?!? The Wii's control is not that horrible. Either you have absolutely no hand-eye coordination GranTurismo or you're too close or far away from the sensor bar.
