Releasing a slim version is going to cut costs for them, so why would they increase the price?

To make even more $$$? Btw, didn't every slim iteration from either Sony or Nintendo release at or above the older phat price? Expecting a price cut and a slim model at the same time is too optimistic.

I'm not suggesting that they have a price cut, In fact I think they'll stay at the $399.99 price point. With the slim model being released, they'll make a savings on component costs, so they'll make less of a loss (or more likely a profit) at the current price. Having a price cut would negate the benefits of making a slim PS3.
For Sony, keeping a phat PS3 and slim PS3 doesn't make sense: the phat PS3 is losing them money, and the cost of making the slim won't decrease as quickly, since they have to buy 2 different kinds of components. Keeping 2 PSP lines, however, does make sense. The PSP-3000 is already making them a profit, and with its rather large price, the PSPGo should make a profit (if it's not, then I have no idea what Sony is thinking). The production of both PSP lines will not cost Sony any money, whereas the production of the phat PS3 will.
