The loss of Metal Gear Solid would be yet another massive blow. Behind every console purchase there is a justification. The average owner has just about run out of excuses as to why they made the purchase in the first place, and more to the point it gives new consumers another reason not to buy the console.
I know some try to minimize this, but with Microsoft having forced itself onto equal terms with Sony. While actually providing more titles and more highly acclaimed titles the PS3 is being seen more and more as an overpriced Xbox 360. You know where I got that. I heard it the other day walking through a store. I heard two guys talking about buying a console, and when one mentioned the PS3. His friend said why "It's just an overpriced 360."
Think about that Microsoft has made its brand the focal point. Take away Sony's last great third party exclusive, and you have to ask what exactly does Sony have left? It is a brutally honest question. Outside of these third party exclusives what does Sony have that is actually a hype generator. Outside of owners who knows about Uncharted, Resistance, Motorstorm, or LBP. Those names don't even have a quarter of the power that Metal Gear Solid does.
That is what Sony would lose if they lost Metal Gear Solid. The crown jewel of their lineup. That which sets their library most apart, and one of the few remaining justifications for buying their console. Sony should be ashamed of themselves if they couldn't maintain a death grip on this title or series. After all they only had one thing left to guard. They should have done whatever it took to keep it. How can you let your best title slip away.
