As a movie format, it sure did fail here... There's little to no shelf space for UMD movies and I don't see it getting sold.
As a game format, it's nice. I'd rather have UMDs than non physical format.

Technologies come and go...
It is not bad to say it was a failure. It sure didn't catch on for portable movies. And the PSP Go isn't going to use it going forward indicating it was either too big or too expensive. And against Nintendo, the PSP didn't sell near as many or at near the rate.
Every company has their share of failures (Microsoft Bob, Microsoft Ole, 360 first hardware revs., etc.). So, I'm going to say Sony failed on this one. No biggy... They are moving on and the PSP Go looks really good.
They will not abandon the UMD, b/c they will still keep the PSP-3000 on the market, even look at the interview, the guy said that all new games will come out on PSN and UMD
a mod brought up a good point in a different thread that if UMD sales drop because of this move, stores might consider dropping UMD stock even more so than now.

29.99€ seems to be a fair price for a new game. I would welcome it as an average price setting for new PSP games. |
30 euro is a lot of cash for a PSP game. I'm fairly sure you can get most of new releases below that prices in online retailers.
7-10 euro for "platinum" stuff and 15-20 would be maximum I could pay for games i cannot sell.

UMD has long been a failure... Sony expected everything would be released on UMD and now you can see how wrong they were... you can put it next to the long list of Sony media formats which have failed.
It's not a failure, it just wasn't that great. It had long load times and couldn't hold that much data.
everyone is missing what's really important here.
Why would pspgo sound funny to brazilians?

UMD is an absolute failure. It was supposed to be the handheld version of the CD rom. Instead, with the inception of flash memory, it is nothing. Bomb.
I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.
NO NO, NO NO NO.
