Forums - Gaming - Different revisions for handhelds , good or bad?

Answer the title.

With the release of the pspGo it got the J man to think about the different revision being released.

*All dates shown are when the handheld was released regardless of region

*I also believe that the first slim revision for each respective handheld were necessary for ergonomical reasons.

                                                                                 DS

The DS was released on November 24 ,2004 and has seen 2 revisions in 4 years(lite , DSi)  meaning 1 revision for every 2 years. Now with the lite released in 2006 and the DSi in 2008 , I believe that this is the best way to do revisions because it keeps the existing userbase from feeling the incentive to upgrade and each respective revision keeps its value for as long as possible.

                                                                                PSP

The PSP was released on December 12,2004 and has also seen 2 revisions in 4 years (Slim , psp-3000) also meaning 1 revision for every 2 years. The problem with the psp's case is that each revision was released in consecutive years (Slim in 07 , 3000 in 08) and is also rumored to release its third revision this year making it 3 consecutive years of revisions. I dont believe that this is the right way to go because the value of each revision deminishes faster.

While were at it , do you believe that the pspGo will be a different SKU or a full blown revision(as with the slim)?

The last thing the PSP needs to do is cannibalize its userbase in the face of the DS.

Its more like a constant, confirmed price cut rumor . With this track record people are going to feel as though a better version is going to come out next year, seriously hurting psp sales this year.

And sony gave up on outselling the ds when it became apparent that nintendomination was on full swing.

I never mentioned outselling.

Right now the last thing Sony needs to do is fragment its userbase.  That's what destroyed Sega in the console war.

Sony needs to run the PSP like Nintendo ran the Gamecube.  Focus on building the library and turning a profit.

My bad , its just that your post to me implyed that the psp actually had a chance against the ds ,sorry.

But yea your right , sony is segregating the psp even further. Before I could talk smack to my cousin saying how fat and obease his psp is compared to my sexy slim. Now it feels like I cant talk any smack and that makes me sad

Revisions aren't good when the new models are both bloated and crippled compared to the old. It's a shame that people tolerated it with the DSi, but apparently Sony has now decided to jump on the bandwagon. Hopefully it won't fare as well, so that the DSi's success is regarded as a fluke and no one tries it again, but I can't kid myself into thinking that's even remotely likely. And so the companies will continue to abuse their markets, who will continue to eat this mistreatment up like candy and beg for more.

What do I hate about modern gaming? I hate tedium replacing challenge, complexity replacing depth, and domination replacing entertainment. I hate the outsourcing of mechanics to physics textbooks, art direction to photocopiers, and story to cheap Hollywood screenwriters. I hate the confusion of obsession with dedication, style with substance, new with gimmicky, old with obsolete, new with evolutionary, and old with time-tested.
There is much to hate about modern gaming. That is why I support the Wii.

No one cares about revisions?
