Forums - Nintendo - RUMOR: Wii Fit Plus coming Fall, new Mario game second half of year

well the bar is set so high for 1st party core releases on Wii, you know what i mean.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

My guess earlier was (note this is PREDICTION, but this was even before Nikkei semi-confirmed this):

Wii Super Mario Bros.

Runs on Galaxy engine, but has a new 2-player co-op mode for Mario + Luigi + Yoshi + etc. and more retro-ish Mario throw backs.

Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Zelda: Majora's Mask were two years in between. Quite frankly it's about time Mario got another installment more quickly. To take an engine like Super Mario Galaxy and to just junk it until the next console comes out is really terrible resource management.

@Nate, maybe but its certainly online so you can see how fat you are compared with the rest of the world.

About Mario 2d, So this rumour at ign about a new DK is like this Mario one. I would say neither of these are 2d bcoz only 6 months ago the Wii had a 2d Wario which didn't sell so well. Not only is it way too close to Wario but considering there has been a whole yr since the last major brand release i dont think theyre going to 2D after so long. This is what i think.

I do wish they come up with some other metric involved instead of just BMI to determine how fat you are. I'm right at the normal/overweight line & it's silly since I'm a vetern weight lifter with a 30-inch waistline. I don't think your Wario analogy holds up 'cause the DS Wario has sold about as much as the Wii one has at this point. Thus Nintendo is likely to conclude that Wario has lost appeal and not necessarily 2D. Plus a Mario sidescroller will be a poly-based 2.5D rather than hand drawn sprites. And it would have head-to-head multiplayer & minigames. Overall a much more robust package.

I think you're talking about 2D style as in no third dimension. we're talking about a "2.5D" mario, something similar to New Super Mario Bros.

if you ARE trying to compare 2D wario to 2D mario, well then.... i'm afraid not many will agree with you, including me and the 18.68 MILLION people who bought NSMB. people loved 2D mario back on the NES and SNES, they love him now on DS, and will probably love him a lot now on the Wii if it turns out to be a 2D mario.

im talking odds here. Last major core "brand" release, before PO and EB, was Wario a 2d game. Odds dictate that they will not do another 2d game, its very simple.

I understand the sprites/2.5d argument but i think that is irrelivent when it is still a 2d platformer. I also preffered the 2d sections in Galaxy, or rather it was the mix of both 2 and 3d that made it so clever, but in terms of what should happen it should be a 3D game.

If both DK and Mario come out this yr maybe then theres a good chance that one of the two will be 2d but we'll see.

@megaman79

I'd be very surprised if the next Super Mario game wasn't, at the very least, on a fixed axis.

Since they would understandably want to finish what they started with NSMB and Galaxy.

Who cares about Odds, the odds were that a new zelda/ donkey kong/ kirby were going to be out before a new mario, but here it is... UNLESS it turns out to be mario party 9 (which it's that bad anyways)

All i'm saying is that people LOVE mario, they love him waaay more than wario, even though they are both 2D platformers, mario is very different from wario and is much MUCH better. So the odds of releasing a 2D mario to boost sales for wii are highly probable (the article said they were releasing a mario game that would boost sales).

again, this is IF it is a main series mario game, if it's actually mario party 9 then all this typing was for nothing, LOL  ;)

I don't think Mario Party 9 is happening until next year. 2009 already has Wii Sports Resort + Wii Fit Plus + Mario & Sonic Winter Olympics for casual/party/mini-gaming it seems, Mario Party 9 would be overkill.

Mario Party 2 DS I think will happen before Mario Party 9.

^^ ya, now that you mention it... that sounds more likely, but you never know... ;)

Mario Party is more popular on Japan than the main series of Mario games, so considering the article is saying it's out to help Japanese Wii state, MP9 sounds more likely, and probably is what's going to happen.
