Forums - Sales - Blu Ray sales are up and DVD sales are down

That is true...for now. But things can change soon enough. Maybe the process will be nearly as cheap as DVD in the near future. Maybe a new format will come out (like the Hologram Disc they have been talking about). But for now, Blu Ray is doing better than most people expected.

I don't think the process is the main reason the prices dropped down.

In my view DVD prices dropped for 3 reasons.

-Some retailers started to use low priced blockbuster DVD as a way to attract customers to their shops ( WallMart for example, Best Buy too).

Lets not forget that a new movie retails at 15$ at Best Buy or WallMart and that is between 50 and 60% of the MSRP so basically retailers forfeits most of their profits on those in order to generate foot traffic in their shops...

-Many retailers expected the transition to HD to go faster and started to try to liquidate their old stocks.

-Netflix and others digital downloads have become serious competitors for old non Blockbusters dvd movies and the only way to compete was to lower severely the price of old movies ( every week you see DVD of movies 2-3 years old for 5$ ).

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

You make valid points, which are all true. So as we move toward HD more and more...they will start lowering prices of the Blu Ray as well, while trying to liquidate DVD's...yeah?

It's still way behind though. Hopefully, we'll see a continuous rise

"Dr. Tenma, according to you, lives are equal. That's why I live today. But you must have realised it by now...the only thing people are equal in is death"---Johann Liebert (MONSTER)

"WAR is a racket. It always has been.

It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives"---Maj. Gen. Smedley Butler

I still think this new 1080p instant streaming technology from MS is going to put a major dent into things. Especially if Netflix adopts it as well as all the cable companies for their own "on demand" services.

1080p with 5.1 surround is pretty much the perfect solution for every home theater. Not many people have anything above that to take advantage of the 7.1 that is Blu-Ray.

^^^^ "BD accounted for 10.5% of total packaged-media sales revenue."

Does anyone know what the % was last year at this time?

I think about the same or maybe a bit less 8-9%?

I believe it was hovering around 6-8% at that time of the year.

slow rise, but im glad i can watch star trek again in it thats for sure

it'll come up, its a stop gap to direct download for sure. but it'll be the main drive for a while, and there will be drives for a bit of time (computers, players, consoles)

Last year's game of the year turned out to be Silent Hill : Shattered Memories (online GOTY was COD 6).  This year's GOTY leader to me is Heavy Rain.

It is not slow rise.. rather Blu-Ray revenues have more than doubled and so has its percentage in the total disk based revenue.

Date Range DVD Blu-ray DVD+BD BD/(DVD+BD) BD/DVD*100 BD% of Week Ending revenue revenue revenue revenue revenue top 20 units TOTAL FOR PERIOD 01/04/09 - 05/24/09 3,949.29 339.83 4,289.12 7.92% 8.60 11.48% (avg of top 20%'s) 01/06/08 - 05/25/08 4,294.64 148.48 4,443.12 3.34% 3.46 4.81% WEEKLY AVERAGE FOR PERIOD Average YTD 2009 188.06 16.18 204.24 7.92% 8.60 11.48% Average YTD 2008 204.51 7.07 211.58 3.34% 3.46 4.81% So last yr Revenue percentage was 3.34.. and this yr it has gone up to 7.92%

So if it finishes above 10% Year end than it will be an impressive feat.

The "no one watches 'Blu Ray'" myth can be put to sleep.
Nice find!

Who said "No one watches Blu-Ray?" That's not a myth, but a blatant lie. People have been watching Blu-Ray movies ever since the first Blu-Ray player launched. People watch Blu-Ray, there are just a lot more people still watching DVD's. I still think another media format will be released within the next 2-4 years from now.
