The problem with the gamecube is that it couldn't keep up with the XBOX and PS2. PS2 held the crown for wide variety of games (the casual games if you want), XBOX came second and GC third. It had some of the good multiplatform games and had some great exclusive games but that just wasn't enough. Not to mention that of the 3 its controller was the most cumbersome.
Nintendo learned its lesson and instead of competing directly with the other two went out on a limb to do something truly new. Thus they have flipped the cards and are now in first. I personally don't really like motion control for most games, I would have rather seen them come out with both a motion controller and a separate traditional controller so games could have both kinds of control schemes or the developer could choose which one to allow in their games.
