Forums - Sony - Cleaning your PS3

Hey, So as most of you know i got the YLOD on my PS3 a while ago (Come on didnt you read my epic post? It can be found here: http://www.vgchartz.com/forum/thread.php?id=66047

Anyhow im trying to be really gentle to my PS3. Ive been on KZ2 for like over 15 hours the past 3 days freaking to get every medal ( I got like 4-5 left only :D:D!!)

So I played KZ2 32 player on a match that was like 1.5 hour long and it froze on me and the sound was looping. MY heart beat like never before and I was like oh please.. no no!! not again! but luckily I just rebooted it and it worked fine *Thank you god... *

I was just wondering, how do you guys clean your PS3? you just take a ''wet'' towel or whatever and clean it? I watched some vids on youtube and used a vacum to clear it apparantly Sony recommends it and it makes sence so im gonna do that like once each 2nd month.

I have the 60GB 4 USB but I heard like you can turn off the system from behind put your finger on the eject button and then turn on the PS3 and it will sound like a vacuum cleaner and ... toss out dust Lol.
Vid on that here = http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OrwpInJMKiU&feature=related

How ever alot of people say that ^ is not good and fux up your PS3.

DO anyone use that method? Can anyone recommend me a good way of cleanin my PS3?

i use the self PS3 vaccum cleaner as you mentioned. Why would Sony add it in if it destroys your PS3? They wouldnt be that F*cking dumb. Surly lol

dont do that, it fries your graphic card. edit: i think, never used it myself i always clean it a more traditional way

I use a keyboard cleaner/compressed air can on all three consoles. It's worked pretty well.

Is there a youtube link to that?

The "vaccum cleaner" option is only available in the 40GB model and newer models, so rest easy you won't find it on your old 60GB PS3. Also, 60GB PS3 run a LOT HOTTER than the newer models so they're quite a lot more likely to have hardware problems, If I were you had bought a newer model after the first one died on me. Just a piece of advice, keep it well ventilated and don't abuse it. That model was discontinued less than a year of being out, and I don't think the only reason was to cut costs if you know what I mean....

But 60GB > all others imo, :( But yeah It gets hot on its right side pretty easily after like 1h.
My died at the age 1.5 year, I hope this lasts longer but with my old I did abuse it kinda, I played 10 hours straight for some days in the 1.5 years that went on so yeah... I dont think any console would last that tbh. I Kinda knew it would happen sooner or later.

Do u recommend me having the PS3 standing UP or DOWN? The thing is, When it is down u can put ur hand on the right side and u feel how warm it is. Isnt it better to have it standing up so the heat doesnt uh.. get such little space kinda?

I'm interested in this!
Never vacuumed it before, I just dust it regularly.
Opening the PS3 up and blowing air should work well (it does on computers) but I fear dust might go into the BR Drive and mess things up there.

"It was confirmed By Sony On DLB's MYSPACE blog a while back that the fan tests Can infact Burn out the graphics chip"

Answer:

i never said it was good for it.. i know its bad... it causes your system to overheat.. forcing the fans to turn on high...

But if you only do it for 10 seconds and then shut it off.. nothing bad should happen..

**BUT DONT TAKE MY WORD FOR IT.. DO IT AT YOUR OWN RISK**..like i did

Its not a self-cleaning process, its intended to test to strength of the fan.  People just found a secondary use for it.  Apparently if you let it run for too long it can damage the GPU.

Personally, I just use a vacuum cleaner a couple times a year.
