I bought Mass Effect yesterday, since it was cheap (only 20 bucks) and it got great reviews. However, I can't help but have mixed feelings about it. It's good at times, but very boring and disappointing at others. Do note that I've only been playing for about 4 hours, so maybe it gets better. I was given access to the ship, and I've visited a couple planets and done some sidequests.
-Fighting is really random. The Sniper Rifle is nearly impossible to aim. It feels like my character is having a seizure while he's aiming it. Plus, hit detection seems kind of wonky. I have to be very close to my opponents to even hurt them, while they can down me from really far away.
That's your reward for picking up a wimpy weapon. Shotgun, Assault Rifle or bust.
-It's too hard. The game started out really easy, but now it's different. In nearly every fight I'm in, both of my allies get shot a few times and immediately die. Then I have to take on the enemies all by myself, popping in and out of cover to occasionally shoot my assault rifle.
Garrus and Kaidan are the wimpiest of your allies. Badassery order is Wrex, Tali, Ashley, Liara - both Garrus and Kaidan are instead more like redshirts than party members, if you get my drift. Now, seriously: your problem is poor party buildup; two snipers + half a techie + half techie/half biotic ain't gonna get you nowhere in this game. If your main is sniping, hang out with Wrex and someone else that ain't neither Garrus nor Kaidan. Ah, you should be using the interface to use their powers strategically as well as tossing some heals here and there.
-The radar is awful. It doesn't give you very clear instructions on where to go.
I never found it a problem so I can't relate nor offer advice, sorry.
-Exploring planets is about as much fun as watching a bowl of pudding. All the planets I've been to are just a series of hills and the occasional mineral deposit.
Non mainquest planets blow, indeed. At least you don't actually need to go to any of them for the main quest but if you are a completionist/wish to acquire the backstory and lore, yeah they are a chore. Easily the weakest aspect of the game.
So does the game get better the more I play it, or is this pretty how much it is from then on out? I love the RPG elements and improving my character, but the traveling aspect is dreadful and enemies are broken.
You need to rethink how you play the game.
