Forums - PC - Anything you should do before refunding a PC?

Well I just recently found out that this Acer I got about 20 days ago isn't fast enough for this music program I use, so I decided that I should refund it for a Dell Inspiron that has a Core2Duo processor.

I'm actually having problems though. My friend used his Silver rewards card at Best Buy when we paid for it, which extends the refund deadline to 45 days on some items. I called Best Buy just to make sure the refund is possible then all the sudden, I'm told the extended refund doesn't apply to computers. I called a 2nd best buy and they put me on the phone with someone else.....I got a quick no from someone that wasn't willing to negociate. I finally called a 3rd one and might have a chance. They put the supervisor on the phone. I told him that I was told that I had 45-days to refund it (yes that's a lie, I'm pretty sure they said 14 days). I explained to the guy that I do alot of music production and that the computer is pretty much unuseable for what I do. He was willing to listen. He spent some time looking through their refund policies and said he couldn't really find anything on the Silver member refunds but since we paid in cash, he also said a refund is possible. Though he said we have 45-days, I still wanna get it refunded fast because if any more probs come up when we go to refund it, I think it'll make us look a little more credible. Prob is that my friend is in Mexico and I need to wait for him to come back. He did say friday, which is today. I'm gonna give him a call later.

Basically the way supervisor put it, as long as my friend is there with me (since he used his card) and I have the PC with me in good condition, I was told I'd get a refund.

So I'm about to save all my data but my main question is......what do I do with the rest of the stuff on here? I've never refunded a PC before. I didn't even have it long enough to mess with Acer's backup/restore thing. Once I got everything backed up to my flashdrive/DVD's, do I just leave the rest there? Or should I wipe everything clean (if that's possible) ?

They shouldn't care what state the disk is in when you return it; if you want to erase it it should be for personal reasons (so they can't see your data etc.). If that's the case then formatting isn't enough - you'll want to use e.g. a Linux LiveCD to overwrite every bit on the disk several times so the data can't be recovered.

Sample LiveCD command: shred -vzn 10 /dev/hda
This will overwrite the whole of /dev/hda with zeros ten times.

Oh, and if you're getting a better PC I can help you get more value for money if you want. PM me with the specs of your proposed new PC and I'll find something cheaper and/or faster.

Well in that case, I can leave pretty much everything on here once I back it up my main stuff. As for specs, this is the new one I'm ordering:

I've been gettin alot of suggestions on a music forum I visit since they have a really good idea of what programs I'm running. They said my current PC's sempron processor is shit and that Core2Duo is the way to go. I plan on using a 64-Bit XP.

I forgot to ask this but, how much power does the supervisor have in this situation? I'm really hoping that the employees from the other two Best Buy's that I called just didn't know what they were doing. The first one just said no. The 2nd one put me on the phone with someone else that said no, but they never said who the other person was. The 3rd one actually told me they'd put me in contact with the supervisor.

I'm pretty worried about it because if I don't get rid of this PC, I won't be gettin a new one. The latest my friend will be back from Mexico is on monday, though he did say todat but I'm guessin it'll be saturday at earliest.
